Nearly Spring guys!
It may still be a bit cold & gloomy but rest assured that things are happening beneath the soil - plants are stirring from their slumber getting ready to show themselves above ground!

This makes me think of the little helpers we don't see - the roots & rhizomes that can help us support our anxious dogs through natural self-selection.

Today I pay homage to 2 humble plants that have a wealth of health support within their roots - dandelion & burdock.

Both have an affinity with the liver, blood sugar regulation & insulin production, amongst a whole host of other benefits.

What does this have to do with our anxious dogs? When faced with a threat the body's fight/flight/freeze mechanism triggers a cascade of biological processes to cope with the event & increase chances of survival.

The liver plays an important part in the before & after of any stressful event - releasing glucose into the blood stream ready for action, then filtering out cortisol once the event is over.

Prolonged/repeated exposure to stress triggers creates an extra burden on the liver & contributes to elevated blood sugar levels, while reducing the effectiveness of insulin. Over time this can lead to physiological imbalances & major health issues.

I find that both dandelion & burdock root are very well selected by dogs when correctly offered as part of a Herbal Choices session.

Why do I do what I do?

I was never one of those kids who had a strong idea of what I wanted to be - in fact while in school I don't think I ever thought that far ahead!

My mum often suggested "physiotherapist" as a career path for me - I didn't even know what that was!

But now here I am, having taken a less traditional pathway to working with the body to help resolve issues similar to those I would have been resolving had I followed my mum's advice.🤔

Having done a string of very different, unfulfilling roles I have found my Ikigai - that which fills me with joy & makes me feel at home🤗

These are the reasons I love my job:
🔥Passion - for helping others find peace in their own bodies again

👣Variety - perfect for a busy brain that easily gets bored! My job means I get to work with a variety of different animals & people using a variety of therapeutic tools

🖌Creativity - no 2 dogs are the same, even if they have the same symptoms. Each session is creatively crafted to suit the body & nervous system in the room for optimal outcomes

👐Hands that listen - I love working with my hands- but a bodyworkers' skills are not just about knowing the technique & applying it to the anatomy – we have highly sensitive hands that are able to feel & “listen” to what the tissues are saying. This is one of the most exciting parts of my job!

🧐Knowledge & learning - you never stop learning about the body! My therapeutic journey has lead me down educational paths & opened new avenues I never had considered before

❓Problem solving - I love a challenge (within reason!) & running a small business in a competitive industry certainly keeps me on my toes!

Have you found your Ikigai?💚🩵🖤

Where does the Bowen Technique & Canine Bowen Therapy come from ?

You may be surprised to know that Bowen Therapy has some very humble beginnings.

Hailing from 1950's Geelong, Australia, this hands on technique was developed by Tom Bowen - a working class factory worker with a talent for helping relieve his work mates' pains & tension during their lunch breaks.

His interest in anatomy & hands on "healing" lead him to begin a journey of self-education, developing the foundations of the technique that is now practiced across the globe.

By the 70's & 80's interest in his technique lead to a select few learning from Tom himself, developing & spreading this valuable bodywork practice that helps countless people & animals recover from pain, some who may have exhausted all other options in their journey to recovery.

In the last 2 decades alone science has caught up! with ever expanding research into fascia, the nervous system, the physical effects of trauma & the body's innate ability to recover & heal itself from a range of issues.

These are exciting times! As we learn more about how our bodies & our dogs' bodies function - both internally & externally - & the institutes of learning expand their range of studies & clinical research into the effectiveness of bodywork techniques in the rehabilitation of a range of conditions💚🩵🖤

A mesmerising mindful moment watching raindrops making ripples in a pond.

Such tiny drops making impactful movements through & under the water, without creating waves that unbalance the whole pond.

Just like light touch bodywork techniques that create ripples through fascia, superficially & through to the deeper layers of the body, right down to each & every cell.

Sometimes the greatest impacts come from the smallest drops 💚🩵🖤 sefordogs

With just 1 week to go before we reach Imbolc, the start of spring, & 3 weeks from the turn of the Chinese year, it feels like we are on the cusp of renewal & growth!

This time we head into the year of the fire horse - symbolic of forward action & vitality🔥

For those with horses this is the perfect time for thinking how to support the health & vitality of their animals as their physiological needs change with the cycling of the seasons.

In celebration of all things horse, I have an upcoming offer on my Equine Herbal choices sessions plus a couple of bespoke packages.

Suitable for anyone who cares for a horse who would like to know how to support their physical & emotional health with zoopharmacognosy/botanical self -selection.

The offer begins at Imbolc (1st Feb) & ends as we arrive at Beltane (1st May), taking advantage of all that the new growth in the hedgerows of the highways & byways, fields & forests can offer for our equine friends! 💚🩵🖤

We begin the year in stasis, when we are only just beginning to regain some of the daylight hours we have been missing & nature is still (or still should be!) dormant beneath the soil we walk on.

This is prime time for resting & resetting frazzled nervous systems, both canine & human.

If you & your dog did nothing today - don't feel guilty.
If you do nothing tomorrow - you are another day into your reset!
If you have no great plans for the rest of the month - you are ahead of the game!

Enjoy this quiet time, your co-regulated nervous systems will thank you🐾💚💙🖤
