The third characteristic is INTERNAL
LOCUS OF CONTROL

How can we begin to support this characteristic in children? Well, a good way is through control of their own bodies and touch.

In schools it is sad that Safe Touch is now so wrapped up in Safeguarding issues. I remember a beautiful peer massage intervention for younger children. In todays’s climate it wouldn’t be allowed.

Yet it was beneficial as it released endorphins for the children involved but also taught them about stopping when asked, identifying what they were happy/not happy with and gave them the script to say “NO”

There is a health warning with this characteristic though - check out the last slide.

Very popular in schools! Sometimes reward frameworks are based on this…. You may hear your child got awarded a Perseverance Jewel or Giving Your Best Panda! Chat to your school about their systems for rewarding effort as well as achievement. Have they considered supporting resilience in children through Growth mindset?

Often meaning, “You are pandering to your child” or “They need to get over it”

Resilience is a group of characteristics,
not a feature in itself. There are practical ideas which encourage the development of these characteristics in children and adults. I will suggest these in the next few posts.

When met with this phrase, reply, “How can we work together to develop resilience in X”

Our children often demonstrate these behaviours in isolation, for example we can see an increase in tantrums during a growth spurt or changes in sleep pattern when they are Ill.

The key is to monitor any changes over a period of time (a few weeks) and if your child is still showing several of the behaviours described it might be worth a chat to school or GP to get support.
