Did you know your body is designed to move during birth?
Lying flat isn’t always the most helpful position. In fact, upright and forward-leaning postures often make labour smoother, more efficient, and more comfortable.
Here’s why ⤵️
1️⃣ Gravity helps the baby move down
When you’re upright, standing, squatting, or sitting forward, gravity works with you.
This helps your baby descend through the pelvis and may shorten labour.
👉 Try: gentle swaying, leaning over a birth ball, or rocking on hands and knees.
2️⃣ Opening the pelvis creates space
Positions like squatting, lunging, or being on all fours can widen the pelvic outlet by up to 20–30%.
That extra room helps the baby rotate and settle into the best position for birth.
👉 Try: a supported squat or side-lying with one knee bent to open your hips.
3️⃣ Upright = better oxygen flow
When you lie flat on your back, your uterus can press on major blood vessels.
Being upright or side-lying keeps blood and oxygen flowing freely to both you and baby, helping contractions stay strong and baby stay well.
👉 Try: semi-sitting, kneeling, or side-lying with pillows for support.
4️⃣ Movement helps the baby find their way
Your body naturally tells you what to do.
Rocking, swaying, or changing positions helps baby align with the pelvis and progress smoothly.
👉 Follow your instincts, if it feels right, it probably is right.
5️⃣ You feel more in control
Being upright often makes women feel more confident, capable, and connected.
Birth becomes something you do, not something done to you.
👉 Remember: confidence and comfort are powerful labour tools.
💛 Doula tip:
You don’t have to stay in one position. Move, rest, and follow what feels right in each moment.
Gravity, movement, and intuition are some of your best birth companions.
