🌊”What was that instrument that sounded like the sea?” After almost every sound bath someone asks me this — and they’re talking about the Ocean Drum.

What is an Ocean Drum?
It’s a circular frame, often made from wood, with both sides covered by a thin membrane. Inside are tiny beads or pellets. When the drum is tilted or gently shaken they roll and swirl, creating the sound of waves flowing in and out — the ebb and flow of the ocean, right in your hands.

If you’ve ever melted into the sound of waves on the shore, you’ve already felt a taste of its therapeutic effects. The ocean drum harnesses that essence — and research backs up its benefits:

✨ Stress relief & relaxation – The gentle, rhythmic swish of beads helps your mind and body sync with its peaceful flow, lowering cortisol and easing tension.
✨ Improved sleep – Water sounds can calm anxiety and create the perfect atmosphere for deep, restorative rest.
✨ Emotional healing – Like other forms of sound therapy, the ocean drum’s vibrations can release stored emotions and promote emotional balance.

Science tells us these wave-like sounds encourage the brain to move into an alpha state, slow the heart rate, and reduce stress hormones. They also mask jarring background noise, giving your nervous system a chance to truly switch off.

When I play it in a sound bath, I move it slowly and softly, letting the beads roll like a tide breathing in and out. A simple sound — yet it can quiet the mind, melt away stress, and make you feel as if the ocean itself has wandered into the room. 🌊✨

☀️ What a wonderful day we shared 🌸🥰30 beautiful souls came together to honour themselves, slow down and refill their cups🧘‍♀️Through Hatha Flow, Restorative Yoga, and Yoga Nidra we gently nourished and softened into stillness. 😌With soothing breathwork we calmed our nervous systems.🦋We walked in silent meditation, soaking in the peace of the land around us. 🖼️We mindfully crafted beautiful pieces of artwork inspired by the stunning landscape beyond.🎶And as the day came to a close we lay back, our minds and bodies already opened up, to receive and absorb the healing vibrations of therapeutic sound bath instruments. 🍰And cake was eaten too!🙏With deep gratitude for everyone who joined — thank you for bringing your energy, your presence, and your heart. 💛 Shine Yoga & Pilates with Dawn

🎶 Spot that slightly unusual instrument in the top of this photo? That’s the Windsinger — an odd-looking therapeutic instrument I use in my sound baths.

💫 It may not win any beauty contests, but when moved through the air, it creates a deep, buzzing hum - almost like a sonic breeze — stirring your senses and awakening something ancient within you. I use it to shift energy, clear space and guide you into deep presence.

☸️I often play it between the grounding depth of the gongs and the clear tones of the singing bowls — it acts like a soft thread weaving the whole sound journey together, helping your nervous system glide smoothly from one vibration to the next.

The Windsinger has roots in ancient instruments like the bullroarer, traditionally used in sacred rituals to shift energy, call on spirit, and move between worlds.

🌀So next time you hear that mysterious buzz dancing through the room, you’ll know — that’s the Windsinger, doing its quirky thing!

What to Expect From a Sound Bath – Before, During & After

I’m often asked: “How will I feel during a sound bath? What might happen after? And will it be the same for everyone?”

Here’s what you might like to know if you’re thinking of joining one.

🌿 Before Your Sound Bath
Come exactly as you are. No experience is needed — just a willingness to rest and receive.

Wear comfy, cozy clothes (think yoga pants, soft jumpers, socks). Bring anything that helps you feel comfortable lying down: a mat, blanket, cushion, eye mask, or bolster. You’ll be lying down for most of the session, so comfort is key.

Arrive with no expectations or pressure on yourself. Sound works beyond the thinking mind — so the more you can relax and let go of “trying” to feel something, the more powerful it can be.

🔔 During the Sound Bath
You’ll lie down or sit comfortably while you’re gently bathed in layers of sound and vibrations from instruments like Crystal Singing Bowls, Tibetan Bowls, Gongs, Koshi Chimes, Rainsticks, Ocean Drums and more.

🔹 You may feel deeply relaxed or even drift into a meditative state, or sleep.
🔹 Some people see colours, feel waves of emotion, or have memories come to the surface.
🔹 You might feel physical sensations — warmth, tingling, or even energy moving in the body.
🔹 Others feel calm, still, and peaceful throughout.

Your experience might be gentle or profound — but it’s always personal and perfect for where you are that day.

🌊 After the Session
Immediately after the session most people feel a sense of calm, grounding, lightness, or mental clarity — like your mind has had a big exhale.

You may also feel slightly spaced out or floaty at first, which is totally normal. That’s your nervous system shifting out of “doing” mode into “being.”

Move slowly after the session until you feel fully grounded. Drink water - a Sound Bath can help release toxins; you will need to flush those out. Journal your thoughts if anything bubbled up. It’s often a good idea to give yourself some quiet time afterwards before jumping back into daily life.

Many people report that they sleep deeply the night of the Sound Bath and sometimes for a few days more. Some report that chronic pain is relieved for a while after.

🌱 The Day After
The next day, you may feel:
🔹 More energy or mental clarity.
🔹 Deeply relaxed or emotionally open.
🔹 A subtle “clearing” feeling in your body or mood.
🔹 Occasionally, you might feel emotional, tired, or even a little sensitive — like a gentle energetic detox - drink water to continue flushing out any toxins that were released.

This is all part of the process of release and integration. Rest, hydrate, and listen to what your body needs. Most people feel lighter and more in tune with themselves in the days that follow.

✨ Will Everyone Feel the Same?
Absolutely not — and that’s the beauty of it. Sound baths meet you exactly where you are. No two sessions feel the same, even for the same person. Your energy, emotions, and physical state all shape how you receive the sound.

Trust that whatever comes up is exactly what you need.

💫 How to Prepare & Take Care After
✔️ Come hydrated.
✔️ Dress comfortably.
✔️ Give yourself space to rest afterwards if possible.
✔️ Be gentle with yourself in the hours and day following.
✔️ Don’t try to analyse the experience — just allow it to unfold and settle naturally.

Sound baths are powerful tools for healing, relaxation, and inner connection — working deeply with your body, mind, and energy without needing you to do anything at all. Just lie back, breathe, and receive.

If you’ve been curious, I’d love to welcome you to a session soon.

Got more questions? Drop them below or send me a message — I’m always happy to chat 🌙

Last night’s sound bath — the second one at Larkfield — was a real success. Huge thanks to everyone who came out, whether it was your first time or you’ve been before. The energy in the room was grounded, open, and just really lovely to be part of.

I appreciate all the questions and conversations afterward — especially those of you who shared what you felt during the session. It means a lot. And thanks for showing so much interest in the instruments!

While I do love all my instruments equally (like I imagine I’d try to love my kids equally, if I had any), I have to say: sitting in front of the gong and feeling feeling its deep, powerful energy surge through me, is hands-down my favourite part every time.

Keep an eye out — we’ll be back at Larkfield in a few months. Looking forward to it already.

✨ About last night… ✨

I am full of gratitude for the wonderful success of our very first Sound Bath With Classical Flute where we blended two musical styles for a special sound journey crafted both soothe and uplift everyone who participated.

I have to admit, when Helen first approached me to collaborate with her and her flutes, I was a bit sceptical. While I appreciate a beautifully played flute, it's not usually my go-to choice for listening. I questioned whether a Sound Bath with Classical Flute would resonate with a broad audience. I was wrong to doubt her instinct! From our very first ‘jam’ session, it became evident that the flute, gongs, and singing bowls were meant to fit together—and that we were onto something special.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and shared their enthusiasm with us afterward! I also want to give a special shout-out to my family for helping to create such a serene and visually stunning atmosphere in the room. And a huge thank you to Helen for dreaming up this concept, selecting the perfect flute pieces to complement my instruments, and providing the reassurance I needed when I wondered if I was skilled enough to perform alongside such a talented classically trained musician.

If you were there and snapped some photos or would like to share a review, please feel free to comment below or send me a DM!

Stay tuned, because we’re planning another session very soon! If you have any suggestions for the perfect venue, let us know—we’d love to hear your ideas!

And for those interested, here are the incredible flute pieces we featured:
🎶 Syrinx by Debussy
🎶 Elegie by Jan Karman
🎶 Sea Echo by Sally Adams
🎶 Sarabande from Cello Suite in D minor by J.S. Bach
🎶 Fantasie Pastorale Hongroise by Doppler
🎶 Earth by Herman Beeftink (tough to pick just one, but this one is probably my favorite!)
(Plus a sprinkle of improvisation by Helen right at the end!)

Some pics from yesterday's rehearsal with Helen Gwyneth Manente for our Candlelit Sound Bath With Classical Flute event on the 25th April at Shorne Village Hall!

It's been an absolute treat to put this programme together. Using a rough structure from my usual sound baths, we (that’s the Royal We, as Helen is the real expert in this respect) have chosen flute pieces ranging from J S Bach to pieces which were written just a few years ago.

We’ve been especially pleased and amazed at how beautifully the two fit together, and how many different timbres and colours we can achieve, creating an atmosphere which at times uplifts and excites, and others calms and relaxes.

We both enjoy collaborative projects, but this one is a bit extra special! We’re really proud of what we’ve created, as it’s a true fusion between the types of sound we each produce.

We’d love you to come and experience this unique offering with us. We have both said that if we weren’t actually playing, we’d totally buy a ticket for this (not that we are biased, of course!)
