Meet the muscle Monday…

The Sternomandibular…

The sternomandibular is the muscle that aids in moving the neck, supporting the jaw and the respiratory cycle.

This is the muscle your horse will be using when working and why it is important ti work your horse in the correct outline and not above or below the bit.

Keeping this muscle supple is an absolute must for your horses wellbeing both in ridden work, and just in day to day life.

Meet the muscle Monday…

Meet the Masseter, this muscle is often overlooked, but as all the muscles, it has an important role.

The function of the masseter is to open and close the lower jaw and to aid in chewing.

Signs of problems with the masseter include-
🐴 difficulty opening the mouth
🐴 reluctance to swallow
🐴 weight loss
🐴 sudden head shyness
🐴 hollowed out cheeks and jaw
🐴 excessive saliva production

This is the first area I usually start working on when working on your horse, because although it’s often overlooked, it’s very important to you horse!

Meet the muscle Monday

Starting off with my favourite! The Brachiocerphalicus

This is the muscle I see most commonly sore and tight, it runs from the back of the skull attaching to vertebrae in the neck and to the humerus and scapula.

Keeping this muscle supple is an essential as its role is to aid in moving the forelimbs! So especially important for your dressage ponies to aid your horse in collecting! While equally important for your show jumpers in getting good clearance over a jump.

This muscle aids in lateral flexion of the head which is important when riding circles and lateral movements!

Soreness in this muscle will make it very uncomfortable to bend through the head and neck and to do exercises such as leg yielding.

Alternatively, overusing this muscle will result in it ‘bulging’ and can make it difficult for your horse to ‘soften’ and will discourage the use of your horse using their core.

So have you noticed any of these issues in your horse?

You might see posts like this often…

Stretching your horse is great for them! But there’s a few things you need to know…

Firstly, make sure your horses muscles are warmed up, you can do this by stretching after exercise, using heating pads, or with your hands, I’d be happy to teach you on a visit the most effective way of doing this. If your horses muscles are cold, you rock micro tears in the muscles and the stretch won’t have any benefit.

Secondly, you need to know what and why your stretching. After a visit to your horse I can show you where your horse needs stretching and what stretches will achieve the desired outcome!

Hope this helps anyone who’s stretching and needed a bit more info! If you’re unsure what you’re doing, my inbox is always open 🥰
