Turn and Face the Strange: Change, Coaching and David Bowie

I do a lot of walking across the dunes and beach and I often find that as I slip into a rhythmic pace my mind is freed by my wandering to wonder; and on this most recent walk I began thinking about change, what it means, how it affects us and I found myself silently singing (because no one wants to hear that) Changes by David Bowie.

I love the lyric "Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes Turn and face the strange’ because for me it encapsulates the very essence of change, the unexpected, unfamiliar nature of it (the strange) and the invite to be courageously open to it (turn and face)

Change can be intimidating, unsettling and sometimes frightening. And despite change being constant; as the Greek philosopher Heraclitus tells us ‘There is nothing permanent except change” - change can often feel like a turbulent storm of revolution sweeping through our carefully thought-out plans rather than a gentle breeze of evolution. It is not surprising therefore, that it is human nature to want to cling to the familiar and comfortable and resist the unknown or the strange.

Whether the change you are facing is personal, professional, planned or unexpected, it can sometimes be daunting to navigate alone. This is when working with a coach could help you explore and acknowledge any uncertainty or fear you may be experiencing in response to the change. Talking with a coach creates space to think and consider what you want and how you would like to respond.

As your coach I would encourage you to think freely and deeply about the change, to uncover the strengths and skills you already possess, which will support you now and in the future. Because change might be inevitable but it does not have to be overwhelming.
