🐣SPRING INCOMING🐣
with spring comes sunshine and cold nights and mornings.
And with that comes the worried and concern owners of laminitic, EMS, PPID or insulin dysregulated horses.
Most people think mid day is the worst time to turn out?! And that is correct in the summer time. BUT coming into spring our nights are still cold and sometimes frosty along with mornings.. this means that the fructose is infact higher in the mornings and mid morning in spring time.

If you are concerned about your horse with any of these above issues and scared of maybe history repeating itself. Here are a few things to note with these problematic horses.

🍬 TREATS 🍬
Remember to factor in treats have a carbohydrate/starch content as well as sugar content..

Such as apples, carrot polo mints..

While apples and carrots are healthy natural treats they are in fact high in sugar.

🍎All different types of apples have different sugar contents. Anywhere between 4-15g of sugar in a single apple. But that's not factoring in the carbohydrate contents which are anywhere between 16-28g!!
That combined is a recipe for disaster!

🥕 carrots also differ in sugar contents also. Can be anywhere between 3- 10g of sugar. Aswell as carbohydrate/starch contents. Which can be anywhere between 6-15g of starch. These being the better option of treat between the two, it is also worth keeping an eye on the amount of them your problematic horse consumes especially with laminitis.

⚪️Then we have the good old polo mint/mint.
Which while they are small in size their sugar and starch/carbohydrate contents is SKY HIGH!
One single mint is between 97% SUGAR alone. Made entirely of glucose and sugar. AVOID AT ALL COSTS if horses have laminitis, prone to tying up, EMS, PPID, Insulin issues, cushings or even weight issues

Below is a chart made to show the sugar & carbohydrate/starch levels combined which is NSC content. And alternative healthier treats for your horses.
