Chairperson - volunteer role advert

We are hiring!
Based in East Lothian, Muirfield Riding Therapy is one of the largest, dedicated Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) centres in Scotland. With a herd of twelve ponies and a large, active volunteer group, we are looking for a new Chairperson to lead the Board of Trustees and to help drive the strategy to deliver leading edge therapy services to our participants.

You will be responsible for providing leadership for the board of trustees; planning the annual cycle of board meetings; chairing and facilitating the board meetings; giving directions to board policy making; representing the organisation at appropriate events; acting as a spokesperson for the organisation where appropriate; support of key personnel; participating in other tasks as they arise from time to time, such as interviewing new staff, helping with fundraising; keeping informed about the activities of the organisation and wider issues which affect its work.

Experience required

Leadership skills; integrity, strategic vision, and good, independent judgement; decision making skills; strong communication skills; tact and diplomacy; an ability to work effectively as a member of a team and an understanding of the legal responsibilities of trustees

Voluntary Sector experience and knowledge of RDA are desirable, although not essential as we will support development in those areas.

Time Commitment and Location

This is a part-time role voluntary role. We are based in East Lothian but much of the work could be completed remotely.

It’s important to get the balance right between activity and rest especially when you have a condition which affects your energy or when fatigue Is factored in.

I always promote activity BUT when you are fatigued and the state of your floors are triggering you instead of sweating then get your robot vac to help you out…..

There are more people than you would realise who have a disability, many of them are hidden! This can affect your mental health as you struggle to manage the challenges that these can bring to your daily life.

Occupational Therapists can help people work out solutions to conserving energy and joint protection techniques for people with Inflammatory Arthritis ( rheumatoid/scleroderma/ psoriatic etc)

An easy hack when carrying bags, carry light bags from a strap on your shoulder or over your forearms rather than your hands.

This is important ALL ofthe time rather than when you have pain as can prevent longer term joint damage.

Having an organised wardrobe can help you:
1. Reduce stress
2. Start the day off much more organised
3. Better clarity
4.Conserves energy

This is really helpful if you have fatigue as part of your condition such as Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia to make just a few!

Take some time to get more organised and this will benefit you in the longer term. It’s the small wins 😄

Occupational Therapists are brilliant at helping you with little life hacks to make those tasks you find difficult just that little bit easier.

If you are finding it difficult to remember hospital or other important appointments and if you have a smart phone Ask Siri/ Google to remind you of your appointment time and date !

There are lots of different technology enabled care ( tec) options you could explore to support independent living.
