A day talking about shoulder dystocia organised by and my first full day away from Luna since having her & back to training since having her - big day.

Can’t rate the day enough it was so powerful and informative. I had a SD with Ned and helped facilitate a SD so had an insight before but our training does not go into the full extent of the possible life altering outcomes. Any maternity worker has to do this course!

So inspired by Mary Steen, Kim and Theo’s stories. What hit me was Kim stating “in the womb she was safe & had two functioning arms, how she was brought into the world damaged her arm and life forever!”

Food for thought research shows rates of SD are ⬆️ but injuries are ⬇️ maybe it’s thanks to training like this we are getting better at facilitating it safely.

Oh and Luna also did an amazing job at taking care of daddy too! Note to self take manual breast pump next time 🫣

My son playing with his doll this morning said - ‘my baby is hungry, I’m going to feed my baby’

should be through normal education. Like learning out A,B,C
• Never hiding breastfeeding so that the little humans see this is ‘normal’ what breasts can be used for and not s*xual objects!
• anatomy of the breast in school including how milk is produced. Just as we do with every other organ in the body! Again this normalises it so when we grow up we know how to support a feeding parent and it’s not completely alien when you come to trying to feed your baby. Maybe rates would increase?
• Feed them load and proud! so others feel encouraged to do the same. I’ve been known to feed while walking round Tesco. If someone dares look at me funny or negatively comment I politely state ‘I’m sorry you are jealous I can make food from my body, goodbye✌️’

… ps. I am very aware breast feeding can be challenging and not for everyone I’ve four children and exclusively fed for years, also bottle fed and combi fed in the past but that’s a post for another day.

BIRTH TRAUMA AWARENESS WEEK

This week should create reflection to both heal and promote change.

How many over the top celebrations in pregnancy do we attend?

Gender reveal, baby shower, baby moon … but how many do we have for the mother in the postnatal period? after she’s had the longest labour, had major abdominal surgery, had a lengthy induction … how many of us have ignored her completely? but sent gifts for the baby or turned up the following day to cuddle the baby?

Let’s rethink and put all of that celebration, planning and energy into supporting mothers postnatally!! Lets plan to leave cooked food on the doorstop, send care packages, a takeaway, buy a c-section recovery massage instead of a baby gift, vouchers for placenta remedies to support her recovery, a frame for the placenta print, hold the baby while she takes a shower, buy her a cleaner for a week, collect her other children from school …

We are a materialistic society that needs to go back to simple acts of kindness to support the postnatal period and we could reduce so much of that mothers trauma! Think postnatal matters!

I HAVE THE POWER … (my sons been watching to much He-man around me! 💥

But is there any better feeling than when you share your passion with other like minded people & feel like you could chat & listen for days! It’s so powerful, you feel like that room could change the world! My head is still spinning with inspiration! Magic!

Thank you to those beautiful humans that came! My imposter syndrome was on high alert so I think I have the universe to thank for giving me a little push! Because it felt like it was meant to be! From small seeds big things grow!

Best Saturday morning spent!

I may have to be brave and do it again soon!

BREATH

Sometimes you have to just listen to your emotions and breath. This week has been full of highs and lows. Today it got to me. I knew I needed rest but my mother load meant I felt I couldn’t. Thanks to my husband he sent me to bed for snuggles & trash tv. There will always be a mother load so take a breath when you need it. And if it feels more deeper please seek to speak to those you love. Please. The NHS website discusses postnatal depression symptoms, if you find these ‘baby blues’ are beyond the early weeks or like me these thoughts have come out of no where later down the line. A recent episode of discussed bf being a trigger of negative feelings and that was like an ‘ah ha’ moment for me! Similarly for some placenta pills have lessened feels of low mood but don’t expect them to be a cure. We are all different. Research. Talk. Don’t be afraid. You aren’t alone. 💙

PLACEBO or NOT TO PLACEBO - YOU DECIDE …

I got this book because 1. Because I’m BF at the mo & it’s an easy supportive read 2. I had heard the writer gave interesting argument on why not to encapsulate your placenta. As a birth worker/ student midwife it’s rule number 1 to always keep up to date with ALL research, to then provide balanced research to those in your care, they then can make an informed decision on what’s right for them.

The main take away from the argument for taking or not taking placenta pills is that there is simply not enough research being done even though ‘it wouldn’t be hard.’ Additionally, Kathleen states in her book ‘our minds are powerful’ I completely agree! And therefore she adds this maybe a placebo effect … but is that a bad thing? If it helps makes you feel good, feel you produce more milk, energy, can we argue then that sometimes the way we feel should be valued over the data? The argument continues …

But I continue to advocate for doing something with your placenta whatever you feel is right for you be it encapsulation, burial, a print or simply sticking it in the freezer until you decide!
Whatever the data the placenta does not deserve to end it’s story in a plastic bag! ✌️

Tell me your postnatal without telling me your postnatal …

the 4th trimester is classed as the first 6 weeks, my baby is 6 months and I remember thinking i’m not allowed to feel or look postnatal anymore! I call bu****it! Recent research said it can take between 1-10yrs! for you to properly recover physically, mentally and emotionally from having a baby. Everyone’s situation is different so therefore do you! be kind to yourself and others, don’t compare, take your time. This week I started doing proper workouts again and it feels great! slow building back me!

Normalise birth, b***s & placentas!!

It still makes me mad why children are not taught about birth, b***s & placenta physiology unless it’s related to s*x education. Being a mum I feel an important part of my role is for them to understand and respect it all in it’s own right so that when the time comes for them to have their own babies if they wish, they get it’s power!

When it came to my placenta we looked at it together, we talked about it’s physiology, how it was made, how it was birthed and I watched as their faces turned from ‘gross mum’ to ‘i’m interested and amazed mum’ part of reclaiming the placenta is making it normal! make it a family occasion to thank it for its work and educate your family! Maybe plant it together under a tree you chose together, maybe frame it’s print together, maybe ask family to buy you an encapsulation package rather than yet another piece of clothing for the baby! that’s where I can help 😉 … please think about it as part of the postnatal journey!

DID YOU KNOW
the umbilical cord has 2 arteries and a vein. When the cord is cut look at them. They look like a smiley face. Two A’s for the eyes, a V for the smile. This is my baby lunas beautiful umbilical smile. I spent agers admiring it’s wonder. My body made that, it’s fu***ng awesome!! bodies are awesome! say it out loud! acknowledge how amazing your body has been!

The umbilical cord transports fresh oxygenated blood via the vein to the baby and carbon dioxide/waste via the arteries from the baby to the mother to be disposed of via their systems.

It is quite literally a life line.

Just one more amazing reason to marvel, thank it and how honour it. I dried myn to spell out Lunas name and framed it. Another thing a placenta specialist like me can do to say goodbye to pregnancy and transition to your postnatal stage with love x
