When it comes to writing a birth plan it can be hard to know where to start.

You may have been told that there’s no point to writing a birth plan as ‘it all goes out the window on the day’. I was told this so many times during my first pregnancy.

Yes, birth is often unpredictable and it helps to be able to adapt to a change of plan, but that doesn't mean you can’t and shouldn’t investigate your preferences.

The process of writing your birth plan will be even more valuable than the actual birth plan itself. It gives you the opportunity to really delve into what is important to you in your birthing experience.

Top tips for writing a birth plan:

✏️ Know that you have options. Do you want a managed or physiological 3rd stage? Do you want your baby to have a Vitamin K injection after birth? Many parents are not made aware before birth that they are able to make these kinds of decisions, make sure you’re in the know.

✏️ Knowing your options and preferences for if things veer away from your ideal birth doesn’t mean you shouldn’t reach for the stars. Focussing on your ideal birth will take you one step closer to achieving it.

✏️ Write your plan with your birthing partner or go through it together once you’re done. Knowing your preferences and your reasons behind them will allow your partner to confidently be your advocate.

✏️ Make a cesarean birth plan. Whether you are having an elected cesarean or an unplanned one there are many options for you to consider to achieve a positive experience.

✏️ Remember that you are in the driver's seat. Whether you want a ‘natural’ birth or you’re a ‘give me all the drugs’ kinda girl, this is YOUR birth and other people's opinions should be left at the door.

For me those little kicks and wiggles are the best thing about pregnancy 😍

You will start to feel your baby's movements between 16 and 24 weeks, although everyone will be different. First time mums will probably feel these movements a little later in their pregnancy than a mum who has been pregnant before, as will those with an anterior placenta (a placenta that is on the front wall of the uterus)

Once you begin to learn your baby’s pattern of movements it’s really important to keep track of them. A reduction in baby’s movements should be reported to a midwife or maternity unit. Never worry about wasting anyone’s time - it is always better to check, even if it’s just for your peace of mind.
count is a brilliant charity raising awareness of baby movements, their account is a really handy one to follow if you’re expecting 🤰🏼

Are you feeling sceptical about hypnobirthing?

When it comes to your pregnancy care and labour scepticism can be a good thing. It means not buying into everything you hear and doing your own research, trusting your body and your own instincts and coming to your own decisions fully informed.

It wasn’t until I went into labour that I truly realised how effective my hypnobirthing preparation had been.
At 39 weeks pregnant I felt and heard a ‘pop’ followed by a trickle. Although surprised I didn’t feel alarmed and I very calmly rang my dad to ask him to pick me up and take me to the birthing centre (while my husband commuted home) so the midwife could check that my waters had indeed broken.
Once at the birthing centre waiting for the midwife to come back after inspecting my pad (sorry, i know, TMI) I sat bouncing away on one of the birthing balls while my dad sat opposite me a bag of nerves and on the verge of tears.
He looked at me strangely and asked ‘Why do you look so calm and excited?!’
I said ‘Well, because I am excited Dad!’
Whilst practising hypnobirthing I knew my ideas surrounding birth were changing significantly, but never did I think i’d actually look forward to giving birth!
In that moment I realised that any fear I had had about birth had completely gone. I knew my body and my baby knew what they were doing.

Still skeptical? Get in touch 💬 to learn more about how hypnobirthing will benefit your pregnancy, labour, birth and beyond 💙

Posted • As promised, the list of hospital trusts and the restrictions they have in place is now available via the link in our bio. Head to ‘List of Trusts & Restrictions’ and when you’re in the spreadsheet, tap the download arrow. You’ll then be able to view the full table which will be updated on Wednesdays and Saturdays. (Swipe right to see the process).

The spreadsheet is best accessed on a desktop as sometimes phone settings can restrict access.

A HUGE thank you to at for collating this together for everyone 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Please do tag and share with fellow expectant mamas and birth workers so everyone knows where they can keep up to date ❤️

You could also seek help and advice through a local doula who will likely be up to speed with the policies in place in your local hospital, and will be able to guide and support you through your journey.
