In mid December we gathered with our youngest daughter and family for a Christmas tea because they are going to be away during Christmas. All of us, bar one lucky member, had been recovering as best we could from a vicious virus of some sort and were tentative of digestion, coughing in relays and low in energy. We were a rather sorry lot gathering for a spot of seasonal cheer! As I looked around at the pale faces and tired eyes, it would have been easy to declare the event a dead loss with the decorations highlighting the flatness in the energy and conversation. Yet when I looked around the table at all the dear faces, I felt a wave of profound gratitude that each dear face was there – recovering and with opportunities ahead to enjoy. Letting go of the festive fantasy and touching love for the now moment made our tattered tea rich with a gentle pleasure and a profound gratitude.
It reminds me of the words the poet Maya Angelou spoke:
“Like a tree planted by the river, I shall not be moved.” Maya Angelou
It seems to me that we HAVE TO MOVE to meet the complexity of life – and yet we also have a choice to not be moved. To have sunk our roots down into such deeply moist and nourishing places that we can bend, flex, sway and remain. What are my roots sunk into? What lends the water of life to my foundation – the magic of nourishment to my Essence? Thich Nhat Hahn said it is not enough to touch suffering, we must also touch joy and peace. Choosing to slow down and savour a moment helps sink your roots down into a river that is always there if we will but remember.
This 2022 has included for both Brett and I, Sarit and her family, relocations and new homes. The challenges were often enormous especially done with a backdrop of shortages, spiralling prices and war. We know that all of you have faced your own challenges against such backdrops and we have so often witnessed your courage, perseverance and flexibility – Bravo! Join us in celebrating all the growth and ‘root-sinkings’ you have chosen this year – may they bring all of you a rich harvest for 2023!
We have a wonderful line up of events in the first quarter of 2023 and we hope to see as many of you as possible!
