Fresh air and a fluffy friend to walk with 🌸🐾 The simple things really are the best things.
We know that getting out of the house can feel difficult — but it doesn’t have to be. Whether it’s a short walk in the park, popping to the shops or simply sitting outside with a cup of tea, we’re here to make it happen.

If you or a loved one could do with a little extra support to enjoy day to day life, we’d love to chat. Drop us a DM or find our email in our bio 💙

⏰ “THE CLOCK ON THE WALL”
A reflection from the perspective of a person living with dementia.

You keep pointing to the clock.

You say,
“It’s only 4:00.”
“We already ate.”
“You just asked me that.”
“We’re leaving in twenty minutes.”

But the clock no longer speaks to me the way it speaks to you.

To you, time is numbers.
To me, time is feeling.

Morning is not 8:00 AM.
Morning is the smell of coffee and the sound of someone kind in the kitchen.

Evening is not 6:00 PM.
Evening is the strange shadow in the hallway that suddenly feels unfamiliar.
It is the exhaustion I cannot explain.
It is the fear that rises when the light changes and my brain can no longer organize the world the same way.

You see minutes.
I feel motion.

You see a schedule.
I feel pressure.

The clock says only five minutes have passed,
but to me,
it may feel like an entire day of trying to hold myself together.

Sometimes the hands on the clock move faster than my thoughts can follow.
Sometimes they move so slowly that I feel trapped in confusion.
And sometimes… I do not know if it is morning or yesterday or thirty years ago.

Please understand:
I am not trying to be difficult when I ask again.
I am trying to find myself in time.

Dementia changes the relationship between the brain and time itself.

The brain no longer experiences time as a straight line.
It becomes emotional.
Sensory.
Fragmented.
Fluid.

That is why routine matters.
That is why calm voices matter.
That is why rushing hurts.

Because when the brain can no longer trust the clock,
it begins to search for something else to anchor to:

A face.
A touch.
A familiar song.
A gentle voice saying,
“You are safe. I’m here.”

Maybe in dementia,
love becomes the new way of telling time.

Growing older should never mean isolation or boredom.
The happiest moments are often the simplest ones — sharing laughter, building friendships, discovering what people enjoy, and being the person who joins in with them.
A walk, a chat, music, games, gardening, dancing, coffee, or simply sitting together and feeling included… it all matters.
Let’s keep creating fun, playful, relaxed, happy times — because connection, friendship, and joy have no age limit.

What do we do at Duchy Care?
Today I visited my lovely client who lives with Alzheimer’s in a care home. Due to her condition, she can no longer understand where she is or how to get home. There is so much anxiety and sadness in her daily life.
But for a few hours, four times a week, we go out together and do the things she loves — nature, animals, architecture and art. We wander through galleries, collect leaves, watch birds, admire old buildings and simply spend time together.
And within those moments, something changes.
She becomes playful again. Her dark humour surfaces. She smiles. We laugh.
She may not know anything about me, and she wouldn’t remember my name, but I think she recognises me as a friend she can relax with. Someone she feels safe with. Someone she can simply enjoy life with for a little while.
For those precious hours, she feels more peaceful. More connected. More like herself again.
And that’s what we strive to do at Duchy Care.
