International Women’s Day 🌙

So much of what we understand about baby sleep today comes from decades of research led by incredible women in science and medicine. Researchers like Mary Carskadon, Jodi Mindell, Harriet Hiscock, and Helen Ball have helped shape our understanding of circadian rhythms, sleep pressure, behavioural sleep approaches, maternal wellbeing, and the biology of infant sleep.

Of course these are just a few names and there are many more women behind the science, working in paediatrics, neuroscience, psychology, and sleep medicine whose research continues to shape how we support families.

And today is also about recognising another group of women.
The mothers who are awake at night feeding, comforting and caring for their babies. The women living the reality of infant sleep every single night ❤️

As both a doctor and a baby sleep consultant, my work sits somewhere between these two worlds translating the science of sleep into practical, compassionate support for families.

Today I’m celebrating the women advancing research, the women caring for babies through the night, and the women supporting other mothers along the way.

Happy International Women’s Day 💛

If sleep has unravelled recently, take a breath.

Around 3–5 months, infant sleep architecture changes significantly.

Your baby moves from newborn-style sleep into more mature, cyclical sleep patterns.
Day sleep cycles are often ~30–45 minutes. Between cycles, there’s a natural lightening of sleep and a greater vulnerability to waking.

At the same time, neurological awareness increases.
They’re more alert.
More easily stimulated.
More interested in the world.

So what looks like a “regression” is actually development.

You might notice:
– short naps
– increased night wakings
– more resistance at bedtime
– a stronger reliance on familiar settling patterns

This doesn’t mean you’ve created bad habits.
It means your baby’s brain is evolving.

With gentle structure and biological alignment, this stage can be stabilised not battled.

Sleep doesn’t need to be perfect here.
It needs to be supported

Comment “PROGRESSION” and I’ll send you my gentle framework for navigating this stage calmly and confidently.

One of the most common things I see when families start transitioning to the crib is the feeling that it’s “not working” even when they’re doing everything right.

So here’s the one thing I wish every parent knew before making the move 👇

Crib sleep isn’t just about putting your baby down in it.
It’s about helping them feel safe enough before you do.

Babies don’t resist the crib because they’re stubborn, clingy, or “bad at sleep”.
They resist it because sleep requires regulation first.

If you’re ready to start transitioning gently, here’s what actually helps ⬇️

✨ Start with one sleep (often bedtime or the first nap of the day)
✨ Keep the routine exactly the same change the place, not the cues
✨ Support your baby in the crib if needed
✨ Expect protest, not panic and respond
✨ Always protect sleep with a Plan B when needed

This isn’t about rushing independence.
It’s about building trust in a new sleep space 🤍

Disclaimer: This isn’t about forcing crib sleep; it’s here to support parents who are choosing to make that transition.❤️

💾 Save this for the next stage
💬 Share with someone navigating crib sleep
🤍 And remember you haven’t created a problem. You’ve created safety.

Hi 👋 I’m Olivia - Founder of The Baby Sleep Doctor.

I wear many hats! I’m a medical doctor specialised in anaesthetics, certified infant sleep consultant, and mum - and here I help tired, overwhelmed parents make sense of baby sleep without fear, pressure, or one-size-fits-all rules.

If you’re here because:

• your baby only sleeps in your arms
• naps are short (or non-existent)
• nights feel unpredictable and exhausting
• you’ve been told “just put them down awake” and it doesn’t work
• or you’re doing everything and still questioning yourself

You’re in the right place 🤍

Here’s what I believe (and teach):

🧠 Baby sleep is biological not behavioural
🤍 Crying isn’t the goal or the measure of success
🍼 Feeding, temperament, development and sleep are linked
📈 Progress comes from understanding, not forcing independence
🛏️ Gentle, responsive support can lead to better sleep

I work with families using evidence-based, medically grounded, responsive approaches always tailored to your baby and your family.

How I support parents:

✔️ In-depth sleep consultations & sleep analysis
✔️ Bespoke, realistic sleep plans
✔️ Gentle methods (no cry-it-out)
✔️ Ongoing 1:1 support and reassurance
✔️ Newborn education & digital guides

Sleep isn’t something babies need to be trained to do it’s a skill that develops best when they feel safe, supported, and understood.

✨ Sleep can feel hard but it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.

👇 If you’re new here, tell me:
How old is your baby and what feels hardest about sleep right now?

📌 Save this if sleep feels overwhelming
📩 DM me “SLEEP” if you’d like to work together

The secret ingredient to better baby sleep isn’t more naps…
it’s stronger sleep pressure.

Every time your baby is awake, their sleep drive is quietly building, like a little internal hourglass ⏳
Not enough awake time? The sand hasn’t dropped yet.
Good timing? That’s when sleep finally feels easier to catch.

Because the goal was never more sleep attempts
it was more sleep drive.

If rocking, feeding, or contact naps feel like the only way right now, it might not be the method… it might be the timing.

Ready for sleep that settles faster and lasts longer?
Book a call and let’s build the pressure the right way.

2025 WRAP 🤍

To the families who trusted me through their longest nights: thank you.
For letting me into your routines, your homes, your exhaustion, and your hope.

Sleep was never about less love.
It was about more support, more science, and more rest for the people doing the loving.

Almost every parent I worked with started by saying:
“They’ll only sleep on me.”
And so many ended the journey saying:
“I finally have my evenings back...”

You can hold your baby and change their sleep.
Both can be true. Both can feel good.

Thank you to every family who worked with me in 2025.
You taught me as much as I taught you.

If you’re here because sleep feels impossible right now, let 2026 be the year you get answers, not judgement.

🧠💤 Follow for science-backed sleep advice that actually works, because you and your baby learn this together.
🔁 And if this hit home, share it with another parent who needs to hear it today. You’re not alone.
