International Women’s Day 🌙
So much of what we understand about baby sleep today comes from decades of research led by incredible women in science and medicine. Researchers like Mary Carskadon, Jodi Mindell, Harriet Hiscock, and Helen Ball have helped shape our understanding of circadian rhythms, sleep pressure, behavioural sleep approaches, maternal wellbeing, and the biology of infant sleep.
Of course these are just a few names and there are many more women behind the science, working in paediatrics, neuroscience, psychology, and sleep medicine whose research continues to shape how we support families.
And today is also about recognising another group of women.
The mothers who are awake at night feeding, comforting and caring for their babies. The women living the reality of infant sleep every single night ❤️
As both a doctor and a baby sleep consultant, my work sits somewhere between these two worlds translating the science of sleep into practical, compassionate support for families.
Today I’m celebrating the women advancing research, the women caring for babies through the night, and the women supporting other mothers along the way.
Happy International Women’s Day 💛
