Today was a special session in our Friday Friends programme. We regularly welcome Rachel from Lancashire Dementia Training & Coaching who spends time with our family carers. Today she was also joined by Angela from N-compass .

Giving those caring for a loved one with dementia time to talk and receive advice, support and reassurance is one of the most valuable things we can do. This would not be possible without our wonderful volunteers who spend time playing dominoes, doing jigsaws and yes, of course, singing with everyone so that the carers are free to chat freely.

A big thank you to everyone who made today possible.

A very big THANK YOU to Rachel from Lancashire Dementia Training & Coaching

Today, Rachel joined us to spend precious time with our family carers — she listened with care, offered thoughtful advice and reminded everyone that they are not alone 💜

We’re also incredibly grateful to the McCarthy Stone Foundation, whose funding has made today’s session — and more to come — possible 🙏

Caring for someone with dementia is an act of deep love, but it can also be incredibly tough, overwhelming and lonely at times.
While we share laughter and connection in our group sessions, we know the challenges don’t end there for carers.

That’s why we’re committed to providing more support sessions in the future — safe, understanding spaces where carers can feel heard, supported and empowered.

I truely admire family carers who have been through many struggles in their life and still manage to share kindness and joy.

People with Parkinson's don't have enough of the chemical dopamine in their brain because some of the nerve cells that make it have stopped working.

Around 153,000 people live with Parkinson’s in the UK. It’s the fastest growing neurological condition in the world.

🥰 I'm posting today on the eve of Mother's Day to say to you all 'I'm thinking of you ' and a reminder to be extra kind to yourself this weekend.

The reminders of what Mothers Day symbolises is everywhere. With shops full of flowers and cards, celebrations and restaurants fully booked. The reality can be completely different and the feelings of grief and sadness can creep in from no where 😥

It's a week before the clocks go forward by a hour ⏰️

It can affect our circadian rhythm (internal body clock) and can add to distress and poor sleep 😴 especially for people with dementia.

Below are some things which you can start to think about this week that can help.

✅Establish a good new bedtime routine by going to bed 10-15 mins later 3-4 times this week.

✅️ Eat smaller portions or little and often after lunch.

✅ Increase meaningful activity during the day.

✅ Keep hydrated though avoid alcohol and caffeine after 2pm, or have decaff.

✅ Encourage natural light during the day and gradually decrease by drawing curtains, using lamps instead of ceiling lights etc in the evenings.

✅ Start talking about sleep and hour before bed. Get ready gradually.

✅ Increase movement/ exercise throughout the day.

✅limit noise eg TV and conversations.

✅️ Use a quieter tone of voice and movements.
