Hips & Yoga Workshop

How to improve hip flexibility and mobility whilst increasing joint stability in yoga āsana.

In our Yoga practice we are continually challenged to increase the range of movement in our hips to safely and sustainably master Yoga asana.

Traditional Yoga approaches tend to seek greater flexibility through more passive stretching approaches and you will often find it described as hip opening. This kind of approach can lead us to fight the natural processes of the body. Our hips do not need to be opened, but they can be persuaded to yield greater range of movement if we work in a way that the body perceives to be safe.

In this workshop we will look at the anatomy of the hips, sharing intelligent approaches for your yoga practice to safely increase flexibility and mobility, whilst also increasing the strength and stability of the hip joint structure.

This workshop will consist of:
- An anatomical exploration of the hip joint
- Sharing of simple and accessible strategies to work and engage with your hips throughout your yoga practice (not just the postures that you might think of with hips!)
- Practical hands on exploration through key yoga postures

We will also begin the morning with an (optional) led ashtanga primary series practice.

What is The Self Practice Space?

In an assisted self practice class you work 121 with a teacher, in the meditative and nourishing environment of a group practice.

It's a supportive, collaborative and creative teaching space in which students have the opportunity to connect with their Yoga practice and body in a deeper way.

Ashtanga Yoga is traditionally taught in this way, the teacher revealing new poses, information and knowledge when the student is ready to receive it. Working together to enhance and deepen the students experience of yoga.

Meet - a senior yoga teacher who has been practising Yoga for over 30 years and one of the co-founders of - a yoga community set up to serve the
needs of Ashtanga Yoga students and teachers in the Hastings, St Leonards, East Sussex
areas and beyond!

Andy first explored Yoga through a Hatha Yoga class and his exploration took him from Hatha Yoga to Iyengar Yoga before finding his Spiritual Yoga home in the Ashtanga Yoga method.

He has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga for over 17 years, and is a 3rd Series practitioner with extensive knowledge and experience in teaching Primary, 2nd and 3rd Series asana practice in the Ashtanga method. He started his teaching through a teaching
apprenticeship with his teacher Gingi Lee at in South London, and subsequently
trained with and , becoming Senior teacher and assistant to John, working on workshops and retreats around the world.

In his classes, Andy combines the precision of biomechanics and functional movement with the fluidity of the Ashtanga Vinyasa method. As a Yoga teacher, and an experienced Yoga practitioner in his mid-fifties, Andy understands and respects the needs of the individual student, which is at the heart of his teaching. He brings an intelligent, creative, supportive, collaborative, playful and non-dogmatic approach to sharing Yoga.

Andy has a wealth of teaching experience, from London yoga studios to retreats and workshops around the world, and is excited to have the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience with the Hastings community.

Classes with him will offer a space for playful exploration in finding freedom in your body and mind.

Introduction to Ashtanga: 2 part course ✨

Have you ever wanted to learn Ashtanga Yoga or how to create a personal self-practice? Or wanting to deepen your own practice?

Join in January for a comprehensive introduction to Ashtanga Yoga and the primary series. Students/participants will learn the key principles and postures for a foundational yoga practice, that they can continue to develop at home and/or in the self practice studio with Andy.

Saturday 14th and 21st November
11am - 3pm (with a 1 hour break for lunch)
📍Wellington Centre, Hastings
Course price: £80.

Booking is essential and spaces are limited. We are running an early bird offer of £70 until 25th Dec.

Join Senior Yoga Teacher in a unique teaching space. Andy cultivates a creative and supportive environment, in which individuals can be supported to develop a Yoga practice to meet their own needs in a safe and nurturing environment.
