This quote is attributed to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus (535-475 BCE) and is as true today as it was then. It is a theme in Patañjali’s Yoga Sutra too, which emphasises the importance of change - PARINĀMA - both in the mind and in one’s understanding of reality.

This post is to announce a few changes at St Davids Yoga.

Face-to-Face Yoga in St Davids:
I am starting a new weekly F2F yoga class in Oriel y Parc, St Davids on Tuesdays 2-3pm.

There will be 3x taster sessions (£10 each) on:
15th April
6th May
20th May
The plan is to run a 7-week course through June & July, and then continue in September.

Please get in touch for more information and to book your place.

Monthly Yoga Workshops in St Davids:
For 2+ years I have been running F2F yoga workshops on the first Sunday of each month, also at Oriel y Parc St Davids (£25).

These sessions are popular and a great way to kick-start your daily practice, or receive some physical adjustments if you do yoga online.

The next one is on Sunday 6th April - please let me know if you would like to come along.

Weekly Yoga Classes Online:
Weekly online yoga classes continue with students dialling in from around the UK and Europe. They are on Zoom on:

Monday at 10am and 6.15pm
Tuesday at 7.15pm
(From April there will no longer be a Saturday morning class).

£35 a month by standing order for online yoga. There is flexibility around catching up on missed classes.

1:1 Yoga Therapy:
I have been delighted by the recent increase in 1:1 yoga therapy students who have been coming to see me.

This really is the way to use Yoga as true support in your life - a daily practice designed for your individual needs. This is how Yoga was originally taught and it’s how we make significant progress.

I see people F2F at my house, but it is also possible to meet online on Zoom.

Thank YOU for your ongoing support and encouragement as my personal yoga journey meanders and moves on. My direction feels clear at the moment, especially with the new F2F class and helping more 1:1 students. My intention is to remain open and spacious to whatever comes next.

Om śāntih, Lisa X

Upcoming Face-to-Face Yoga Workshop

📅 Sunday 1st December
⏰ 10am-12pm
📍 Oriel Y Parc, St Davids
🩵 Theme: Midwinter, Moving Toward Stillness

The practice will be centred around moving toward stillness in postures, and using the BK (pause after the exhale) to help us go through the doorway into winter with a lightness of heart.

I recently attended a conference hosted by and the .

The question posed was “Does Yoga contribute to health? Does it instil hope?
Can it foster healing?”

Several professors and associates from King’s College London, Royal Holloway, University of London and Harvard Medical School shared their research findings
about this question. Much of the research is from Yoga and meditation in prisons (where they are promoting health & wellbeing) largely because this is where the funding is available.

They carried out psychoneuroimmunological investigations on the effect of deep relaxation on chronic stress and Yoga as a therapy for mental health. The rationale, science and research evidence were presented over the day, with a final summary of findings.

Over a 12-week programme, participants reported and tested positively in the following areas:

✅ Improvement in mental health, dealing with stress, anxiety and depression
☺ Better quality of life
💤 Improved quality of sleep
💭 Better interoception
🤸‍♀ Enhanced metabolism
⚡ Improved parasympathetic tone
🔥 Reduction in inflammation
🧠 Induced neuroplasticity

The headline speaker was Professor Sat Bir Singh Khalsa from Harvard Medical School. He was very clear that just doing postures and poses does not achieve the same results. A yoga practice must also include the following to see these benefits:

🫁 Breathing (prānāyāma) exercises
🤲 Deep relaxation (nidrā)
🧘 Meditation

For me, having practised Yoga for 25 years and taught it for 14 years, I was delighted to see and hear the proof of the benefits of the style of Yoga I am trained in, and understand why students keep coming back to the mat.

The start of term is upon us and so is a new Yoga Philosophy Group 🧘✨

We will continue with the 8 Limbs of Yoga:

Chapter 2 of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra - the prānāyāma and pratyahāra sutras in Sep & Oct
Chapter 3 of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra - the dhārana, dhyāna & samādhi sutras in Nov & Dec

If you were not in the group in Jan-May, it doesn’t matter, each of these sessions can be understood as a stand-alone, although it is of course much better to study them as a whole.

Online: Zoom
Our Theme: Prāṇāyāma
1st Sunday of every month, September - December.

First session on Sunday 1st September, 3:00-5:30pm.

The Pañca Maya is the theme of the current 10 week yoga course (which is handy as pañca means 5).

Every 2 weeks we will explore an aspect or layer of our being, moving from the gross to subtle.

The āsana practices will reflect the theme, and hopefully bring more of a personal enquiry to the philosophy.

✨ Yoga as a Pilgrimage ✨

Many of you know I walked the Camino Portuguése from Porto to Santiago de Compostela in April with my daughter, Fen - it is one of the most brilliant things I have done in my life for so many reasons. It touched me deeply on many levels.

Fen and I were both struck by the intense scent and clean air in the eucalyptus forests, it was intoxicating and grounding, we found ourselves yearning for it. It felt like a sanctuary at times, a church even.

I was listening to a Brené Brown podcast on my journey home (she is my hero) and she asked this question: “Where’s your church?”

For me, both on the Camino and more generally, it’s walking somewhere beautiful - like our coast path - with other ‘worshippers’. It is also Yoga, of course, and pottery.

Where’s your church? Maybe it actually is church, or yoga, gardening, fishing or cooking? I think it’s anywhere you feel fully alive and where you can be your true self. It’s where you are totally at home and it’s where you find your peace.

Prioritise it now, above all else. I’m going to.

And on pilgrimages, in a synergistic coincidence (is there really such a thing?), my teacher Ranju’s latest book came out in February and includes more simple, practical and life-affirming concepts to guide us through our Yoga journey.

I love his style - if you know Ranju it really is like he’s talking to you. The book is a companion while you walk this particular path.

Om Shanti X

As many of you know, I am currently walking the Camino Portugués from Porto to Santiago with my daughter, Fen. We’re walking the 240km route over 12 days.

What an incredible journey it has been so far; the Atlantic coast is stunning and we are quite overwhelmed by the beauty and scent of eucalyptus forests.

This trip is a fabulous reminder of several important life lessons, notably:

🎒We actually need very little stuff - far, far less than we think. I am perfectly happy with my small pack of clothes, toiletries and one good book.

💪🏻 My body is capable of so much more than I give it credit for. It works very well, especially when I nourish it properly and get enough rest.

🤗 People on the whole are good. Fellow pilgrims, hostel staff and locals could not have been friendlier or kinder.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Bom Camino! 🥾

Patañjali’s Yoga Sutra is one of contemporary Yoga’s main sources of inspiration and guidance on how to live a balanced and ethical life - both on and off the mat.

My monthly Yoga Philosophy Group is a well established with yogis/yoginis from a variety backgrounds, and we absolutely LOVE discussing and sharing the relevance of this to 21st century life in the West. We also spend 30 mins chanting.

The group is particularly relevant for serious students and yoga teachers, but any one with an enquiring mind can join. You are very welcome to join us.

I’m Lisa 😊 I live in the heart of St Davids, Pembrokeshire, with my husband Roger. I believe this is one of the most beautiful and inspiring places on earth, and I am grateful to call my business St Davids Yoga.

Yoga found me soon after the birth of my son, my second child, because (like many women) I was struggling to cope. From my very first class I knew I’d found a practice that would sustain me - and it has!

I initially completed two 500hr Yoga Teacher Training courses with Sadhana Mala and went on to do their Antenatal Yoga, Vedic Chanting and Ayurveda training courses. I continue to study, practice and learn with Dave and Ranju, and it has been a privilege to pass on their Art of Viniyoga Foundation Course to my own students in St Davids.

I am also qualified with and insured by the British Wheel of Yoga.

I also work as a leadership and management consultant for red10 People Development.

I spend my spare time with family and friends and love walking the coast path followed by a coffee in a local cafe! I frequently go to a local pottery class and crochet when I’m feeling really creative!
