What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a complex specific learning learning disability.
According to the Delphi Study (2025) Dyslexia is a set of processing difficulties impacting reading and spelling acquisition.
So yes, Dyslexia does affect literacy skills, especially reading fluency and spelling, with phonological skills often being a main focus but it affects so much more.
Processing speed, working memory and orthographic skills (word recognition, spelling skills, awareness of letter position) may be impacted, along with acquisition of other skills such as Maths.
On top of this, if you are dyslexic you are more likely to have a co-existing condition such as ADHD, Dyscalculia or Developmental Coordination Disorder. These can further impact executive functioning such as emotional regulation, impulsivity control, sustained attention, ability to switch tasks, and fine and gross motor skills.
Also recognised by the Delphi Study was the genetic link to dyslexia being a high risk factor. However, it is identified that multiple genetic and environmental influences affect the ways in which the individual is impacted. The impact of dyslexia for any individual can change over time depending on circumstances and experiences - see my comments below!
Interestingly, the Delphi Study also recognised that
"Protective factors in dyslexia include early and sustained intervention, and good verbal, nonverbal and oral language skills".
My personal experience of being diagnosed dyslexic and receiving specific personalised support from both a tutor and use of assistive technology showed me what an impact the correct support can have. This is the exact reason why I am so passionate about supporting dyslexic learners!
