I think most of us have experienced a time in our lives when we feel wobbly, anxious, sad or 'not safe'. For most of my adult life my 'go to' when I felt like this was alcohol.

Alcohol saw me through many challenging times in my life from being dumped by a boyfriend to feeling lonely when I lived overseas to being made redundant. Alcohol seemed like the perfect partner because it temporarily soothed the emotional pain I was going through.

It took me a long time to realise that whilst it might make me feel better for a short while, invariably I would wake up the next day with a hangover AND the thing that had caused me pain in the first place.

It was only when I embarked on a daily yoga practice that I developed the mental fortitude to quit alcohol for good. I can't say whether it was the fact I was consistently less stressed, spending more time in the nervous system, or developed equanimity that meant I was able to win the battle with booze. But my certain played a huge role.

Today yoga is a huge part of my life and, if you've come to one of my classes, I will regularly extol its benefits both on and off the mat. Yoga gives me the time and space to observe my thoughts, both good and bad, and to help me better understand myself. It helps me to see that my thoughts and feelings are just that. They come and go like sunshine and cloud. They are not facts or permanent states of being. As a result, I am better equipped to be in the present, and at peace, rather than indulging in addictive behaviours that help me to 'numb out'.

I often regretted having a glass of wine - I have never regretted time spent on my .

"Don't hurry, don't worry, and don't forget to smell the flowers"

When I was about seven years old my best friend at the time gave me a bookmark with these words on (and a cute drawing of a snail - I was 7 after all!). I've come back to them many times over the years, as a reminder that, sometimes, we just need to slow down and enjoy everything that life has to offer us.

Whilst we may feel more energetic in summer, more enthusiastic about doing things, summer offers a wonderful opportunity to ease our pace, recharge our batteries, and reconnect with what truly matters. This isn't advice about completely stopping our work or responsibilities; rather, it's about dialing back, shifting gears, and making room for moments that can enrich our lives.

One way to do this is by enjoying the wonderful weather. Let's be honest, the warm weather just calls us to be outdoors. Research suggests that being outdoors can improve mental health, increase vitamin D levels, and reduce stress. But we can't reap these benefits if we're cooped up indoors working all the time.

Why not come and join me for hatha yoga in the great outdoors at every Friday at 9.45am. Visit https://buff.ly/3MLIk8U to book your spot on the mat.

Oh my goodness the heat! As I type this I have just returned from the sweltering heat of our loft where I have retrieved a huge fan from the deepest darkest depths that it has been lurking in since the end of last summer. I am optimistic I might have a cooler and better night's sleep now.

Heat tends to make us more stressed and irritable, so yoga is ideal to turn to, to help us find inner calm. Whilst some poses actively build heat (think sun salutations and warrior poses), others are ideal for practicing in hot weather including puppy pose, and heart openers like fish pose and camel pose. Not forgetting calming practices like left nostril breathing and meditation.

Today I have been joyfully practicing the 'art of doing nothing'.

After two crazy weeks of working long hours to complete a course (details coming soon), supporting both my children with exam revision, as well as covering a fair few exercise classes, the downtime I took today has been much needed.

There's an odd feeling which goes with having nothing in the diary. It feels a bit unsettling, as if one should be doing something but has forgotten to write down what.

As a general rule I don't 'do' nothing. I am a busy person. As a teenager my father would always find things for me to do as he felt doing nothing was unproductive. Today I subconsciously equate doing nothing with being lazy, and not achieving anything.

That couldn't be farther from the truth. The art of doing nothing is the active pursuit of rest, relaxation, and just 'being' without allowing outside influences in. It involves conscious, mindful activities that allow us to truly relax and refill our cups so that we may be nourished for longer.

It could even be the key to a healthy and happy life. When you allow yourself time to do nothing, you give your brain the chance to process experiences, consolidate memories and reinforce learning. Significantly, it is only whilst at rest that your body is able to heal itself.

So today I have been joyfully practicing the 'art of doing nothing', knowing that it could mean everything.
