Workout time!!

9 months ago I re-joined the gym after at least 16 years. I’ve always been pretty active with my job, teaching pilates, adhoc exercise and chasing around after 4 kids but wasn’t really pushing myself physically or doing anything to make myself stronger. I was spending my days telling my patients/clients to move more, exercise and to strengthen but making excuses for not doing it myself!!

Muscle strengthening is crucial for maintaining overall health by improving our ability to perform daily activities, protecting joints from injury, enhancing balance and stability, managing weight, boosting metabolism, and promoting bone health, especially as we age. Sadly we all start losing muscle mass once we hit our 30s.

It’s not always easy finding the time but I’m really enjoying it and definitely feel better for it. The key is finding something you enjoy that you can sustain longer term. Go on take the first step…

Afternoon tea this afternoon to celebrate (almost) 23 years working for the NHS! 🙌 Can’t quite believe it’s been that long!

Wishing everyone a very happy and healthy 2023!!

I’ve been a bit quiet on here recently, courtesy of our current house extension but I look forward to being more visible on here this year.

November 2022 saw Lindfield Home Physio’s 1st Birthday which was an exciting milestone! It’s been great to see the business start to grow 🤩

It’s not been the best start to 2023 so far, thanks to Covid on Day 1, but I’m excited about some ideas and aspirations for the coming year - all geared towards supporting those with Neurological and mobility problems to be more active and get fitter 💪

Celebrating National AHP Day 2022!! ⭐️

A day to recognise and improve the awareness of the 14 groups of health professionals that make up the 3rd largest healthcare workforce.

All with their own unique and specialist knowledge base and skill set to help provide the specific care different patients need. This includes Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech & Language Therapists to name but a few.

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for me…after 14 years of having at least one preschooler at home, my youngest started ‘big’ school today.

It’s certainly a bag of mixed emotions but it’ll free up a little more time for me and Lindfield Home Physio. So watch this space for new developments 😃

This could be how some of my Parkinson’s clients feel tomorrow!! 😅🤣

I have just taken over the running of Parkinson’s UK local exercise class for those with young-onset Parkinson’s. Great first class back today after some time off; lots of hard work and sweat!! There will certainly be some achey muscles tomorrow!

Everyone should exercise for physical and mental well-being. But it’s particularly important in those with Parkinson’s as it has been shown to slow the progression of the disease.

Get in touch if you fancy joining in or know someone who might benefit 💪

Affecting more than 145,000 people in the UK alone, Parkinson’s is the fastest growing Neurological condition in the world. Yet, so many people know so little about it.

As a Neurological Physiotherapist, I help people to maximise and maintain their function through exercise. Current PD medications just help control some of the many horrible symptoms, so until a cure is found, exercise is the best way to slow the progression of the disease.

Consolidating my hydrotherapy skills on the ATACP Foundation Aquatic Physiotherapy course this weekend. This will be a really useful adjunct for my NHS patients but also in my private practice 👍

🤜 USE IT OR LOSE IT!!

This well known adage couldn’t be more accurate than when we think about muscle mass and strength.

Sadly once we reach our 40s we can lose up to 5% of our muscle mass and strength each decade; this can double at 70 years old. This process is called age-related sarcopenia and will ultimately lead to a loss of function. This will occur for all of us but is accelerated in those that are physically inactive.

A large part of my current role as a Physiotherapist is to encourage increased activity levels, and participation in focused exercise including strength training.

So, this is another reason to add to the list of why exercise is so important 💪🫁🧠🦶🤩

It’s CPD time!! To support my work in both the NHS and within Lindfield Home Physio.

FND or Functional Neurological Disorder is a very complex condition which is very poorly understood. There is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system where effectively the hardware is considered intact but the software is malfunctioning.

It can present in a huge variety of ways and can be very hard to treat and manage especially within the resources of the NHS. Hopefully I’ll learn some new strategies to help effectively treat this patient group from this 8 module virtual course from Australia
