Our trustees, Dr. Jo Cryer and Annemarie Sims recently met with a Japanese research group led by Professor Satoru Takahashi (Tokai Gakuin University) as they visited the Complex Feeding Service at Evelina London Children's Hospital as part of their international fieldwork on ARFID and eating difficulties in children.

The group learned about clinical approaches to assessment and intervention, the challenges of school accommodation and the gap between diagnosed and undiagnosed children in receiving school support. They also learned about the awareness-raising work of ARFID Awareness UK.

The group has previously conducted fieldwork in Sweden - including a visit to the Stockholm Centre for Eating Disorders - and is committed to bringing insights from the UK to inform research and policy in Japan.

We are delighted to announce major milestones for ARFID Awareness UK:

First, the appointment of our first Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Harrington. Andrew joins AAUK with a strong track record of leadership, strategic delivery, and organisational growth. He brings deep experience in building and scaling initiatives, driving operational excellence, and fostering impactful partnerships, skills that will be critical as AAUK enters its next phase of development.

As a young and growing charity, this appointment marks a pivotal step in strengthening our leadership structure and accelerating our mission to raise awareness, improve understanding, and support those affected by ARFID.

James Raymond, Chair of the Board of Trustees, commented:
“Andrew’s appointment represents a significant moment for AAUK. His blend of strategic insight, operational discipline, and passion for impact makes him the ideal person to lead the organisation forward. As we look to increase our engagement with the ARFID community, mature our organisation and increase our fundraising to power our ambitious goals, I am confident that Andrew will play a central role in shaping the future of AAUK."

Second, the return of our Founders, Nicole Kirkland and Stacey Lambert to the Board of Trustees, after steering AAUK in an Executive Director capacity for the past 7 years. Their advocacy for spreading awareness of ARFID was the genesis of AAUK, and their organisation drove our initial fund raising and secured a National Lottery Grant that has enabled the growth that AAUK has enjoyed. We are thrilled to have their continued leadership on the Board of Trustees.

Andrew will work closely with Nicole, Stacey and the Board of Trustees to drive the charity’s strategic priorities, expand its partnerships, and enhance its programmes and advocacy efforts.

Please join us in welcoming Andrew to AAUK, and thanking Nicole and Stacey, as we continue our journey to make a meaningful difference.

On Wednesday, our co-founder, Stacey Lambert, attended the Medical Research Foundation Eating Disorder Showcase. It was an inspiring event that brought together researchers, clinicians, funders, support organisations, and lived experience experts, all dedicated to advancing the field of including

This showcase provided a vital opportunity to highlight the fantastic research currently being funded and discuss the essential next steps for eating disorders research in the UK.

The day included presentations showcasing a selection of the fantastic Eating Disorders researchers in the UK, panel discussions highlighting best practice for the involvement of people with lived experience of Eating Disorders in research and a workshop session to explore and define the priorities for next steps in UK Eating Disorders research and funding.

The lack of a national strategy for eating disorders further complicates the provision of adequate support and treatment, leading to inconsistencies in support, intervention and treatment across the country.

By fostering more coordinated research efforts, we can make real strides in improving funding and developing a more inclusive approach to mental health.
