NHS England has recently published new guidance for children and young people’s eating disorder services, bringing much-needed attention to Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Here’s an overview of what this new guidance includes and where gaps remain.

What’s positive:
• ARFID is recognised as a distinct eating disorder, helping to increase awareness and understanding.
• A focus on personalised, multidisciplinary treatment, tailored to the individual.
• Emphasis on mental health and wellbeing alongside nutrition, supporting a more holistic approach.

What’s missing:
• Uncertainty around how consistently this guidance will be implemented, risking inequalities in care.
• The guidance focuses on children and young people only. Adults with ARFID still urgently need dedicated guidance.
• Limited and variable resources, including a lack of trained professionals, may hinder effective delivery.
• A clear need for ongoing research to build stronger, evidence-based best practices for ARFID.

Let’s keep the conversation going and continue advocating for better understanding, resources, and care for everyone affected by ARFID. 🩵

Last week, we were proud to attend the London Roadshow “Developing ARFID Pathways for Children and Young People: From Evidence to Practice” 🩵 This is off the back of the UK's first incidence study that we sponsored.

A huge thank you to the team who organised such a productive day, filled with meaningful discussion about how we can better support families facing ARFID challenges. The collaboration, insight and shared commitment in the room were incredibly valuable.

We’d also like to give a special thank you to Michelle and Lucy for joining us and bravely sharing their lived experiences. Your honesty is powerful, and your stories will help push for better services, understanding and support for families affected by ARFID.

This event was specifically focused on children and families facing ARFID, which is where these pathways are currently being developed. While we are also actively pushing for improved support for adults with ARFID, we recognise that children’s and adults’ services are very different and need to be addressed separately.

More roadshow events are coming soon, including Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol! Together, we keep pushing for better support, better pathways, and better outcomes for families living with ARFID. 🩵

ARFID Awareness UK is gathering anonymous insights from parents and carers to better understand what it is like to access assessment, diagnosis, and support for children and young people with suspected or diagnosed ARFID.

This short survey focuses on pathways and experiences, not clinical detail. Your responses will be used in aggregate to help inform professional learning and discussion as part of a UK-wide ARFID roadshow.

All responses are anonymous.
