One of the best elements of hypnotherapy is the sense of calmness and safety it can foster in your body. It helps you regulate your mood and calm down your nervous system.

When life is stressful your body can go into 'fight or flight' and stay there. You might recognise the symptoms.....feeling on edge, your heart rate feels slightly raised, your temper is quick to fire up, your feelings are quickly hurt. Hypnotherapy can help you come down from this state to feel more in control and calmer, giving you more clarity.

As summer turns to autumn you may feel reflective about the passing of time....the turning of the clock onto a new school year. Even if you're not in education any more or you don't have children at this stage of life most of us remember the feeling of starting afresh in September.

September can be a great time to make positive changes (and if you need some help with those, with overcoming a phobia, achieving a target you've set yourself or building your confidence please get in touch.) But one of the best gifts you can give yourself is to to try to talk to yourself a little more kindly, a little less critically..... remember you are doing your best and that is all you can do.

How was your summer.....really?

Through the lens of social media it's easy to think everyone else has been having a great time....amazing holidays, family time, barbecues with friends....the list goes on. But remember social media only ever shows you part of the story.

If your summer has not been so much beaches and sunsets, and more tears and frayed tempers that's ok. That's life. Try to carve out some moments for you, to help yourself reset and recharge.

This pretty vase of flowers has given me a lot of pleasure when I look at it on my kitchen table.

The vase is a new one for me - I found it at the tip! Someone else had thrown it away.

It shows that there are different ways of looking at the same thing. Just as if you wore a pair of sunglasses which had a green or brown tint the same world could look very different..... If you feel happy or sad the world can look very different.

Can you choose to look at a certain situation in a different light? Does it help?

One of the important features of any type of therapy is that it gives you a safe space to explore your feelings so that the path forward can become clearer. This is particularly true in solution focused therapy (which is the model I follow) as it is around looking for solutions to issues rather than analysing the issues themselves.

Hypnotherapy can take this one step further on a subconscious level. Just as our minds work for us overnight through our dreams, helping us process and sort information; hypnotherapy can give us clarity and space to work things out alongside calming down our busy minds.

I was quite surprised to realise I hadn't posted on social media since the start of June. Sometimes life becomes busy and with work, family, and other commitments some of those tasks that can be part of our routine fall off (exercise often falls into this category!)

So I am back again with a gentle reminder that if you have fallen off track of whatever it is you want to commit to you don't need to go all in.....I don't need to plan social media content for the next 6 months straight away, you don't need to book gym classes for the next 3 weeks or meal plan for the next week all at once. Just take that first little step to get back on to it....and see where you get! But if that's too much just at the moment then that's fine too.....give yourself what you need and sometimes that is a little space.

One of the many benefits of hypnotherapy is that it helps calm your nervous system. This is so important because when your nervous system is in a state of high alert you can't think clearly, you are easily triggered and life can feel overwhelming.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session? This is one of the questions I get asked most often.

About half of my sessions are hypnotherapy- which is a lovely guided meditation to take you to a beautiful place of your own choosing (as some people are drawn towards beaches, others woods or a cosy cabin.) Here you can feel relaxed, safe and calm and you can access the part of your mind that knows you can make the changes you want to and achieve your goal.

The first half of the session is talking.....in a natural, relaxed way to consider your week and what you've done well, enjoyed or noticed. This builds on your strengths and leads you into a good place for the hypnotherapy.

Clients will recognise this visual that I share a lot.

If you have a goal it can be easy to be overwhelmed if you try or expect too much too soon. This applies to all sorts of situations and emotions, not just practical desires.

By breaking down what you want to achieve into manageable steps you are able to keep focused and calm instead of getting overwhelmed or frustrated when you don't achieve what you want straight away.
