The Guest House

This being human is a guest-house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy,a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrow, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture.

Still, treat each guest honourably.
He may be clearing you out for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

Walk slowly
It only takes a reminder to breathe,
a moment to be still and just like that,
something in me settles, softens,
makes space for imperfection.
The harsh voice of judgment drops to a whisper and I remember again that life isn’t a relay race;
that we will all cross the finish line;
that waking up to life is what we were born for.
As many times as I forget,
catch myself charging forward without even knowing where I am going,
that many times I can make the choice to stop,
to breath,
to be and walk slowly into the mystery.

After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul,
And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
And company doesn’t mean security.
And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts
And presents aren’t promises -
And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open,
And with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child
And you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for your plans.
After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get to much.
So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul - instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you will learn that you really can endure, that you really are special.
And that you really do have worth.
So live to learn and know yourself.
In doing so, you will learn to live.
