Exercises form a key part of any physiotherapy treatment and rehab programme, for any species of animal....

Something that seems as straightforward as stepping over a line of poles will have huge benefits if done regularly over a period of time.

Clients often express that they have difficulty finding the time to do physiotherapy exercises with their horses.

This can be down to a mix of practical and psychological factors. Most of us already juggle work and busy lives, but the key is to
finding a structure so that the exercises have a natural place within your daily routine.

The other principle is to keep the exercises simple, they do not have to be complicated involving multiple poles and expensive equipment. Stepping over a line of poles will help improve the blood flow through muscles, joints and other soft tissue structures, improving flexibility and strength. It will also help with coordination, movement and balance. Improvements to posture, strength and flexibility are also seen.

Having a line of poles to walk over every time you leave your horse in and out, the field seems very basic but will have significant benefits.

A great day 2 at the ACPAT conference- lots of amazing speakers and information.

We have explored canine gait and posture, looked at the demands placed on the working dog, strength and conditioning and looked at new orthopaedic surgeries.

The conference is also a great opportunity to catch up with fellow physiotherapists, discuss ideas, problem solve and explore new thoughts.

Great first day at the ACPAT - The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy conference.

Today the focus was the equine neck, looking at neurological and biomechanical assessments. Great talks on physiotherapy treatment, headshaking and bridle fit followed.

Looking forward to the canine day tomorrow 😊

With all the blustery weather recently, it really feels like Autumn is upon us.

Different seasons all bring different challenges to a physiotherapist. As we head into Autumn:

The temperature drops, and this leads to muscles and joints feeling stiffer, the bodies circulation slows down, and warming up the body takes longer.

The damp, wet, and slippery ground leads to more slips, trips, and falls outdoors, for walkers, hikers, runners and sports players.

Shorter daylight hours means less physical activity, our mood changes, and poorer adherence to rehab is noted.

Also, seasonal sports, gardening and DIY jobs such as rugby, football, cross-country running, and heavy autumn gardening, raking leaves and repairing storm damage will bring specific strains.

The best advice is:

Keep active and consistent, try not to let the darker evenings stop exercises and rehab.

Dress in layers that are easy to put on and off during exercise, and wear supportive footwear outdoors. Proper walking boots and trail running shoes offer much more support and grip on the wet, slippery ground.

Stay hydrated to help prevent injuries (people forget when it’s cooler).

Use light, regular movement throughout the day to prevent stiffness.

And, finally, don’t skip physio just because your symptoms feel seasonal — early intervention is always key.

It's been an amazing Burghley week. Have thoroughly enjoyed supporting the talented team of Buster and Simon Grieve Event Team with physio throughout the event.

Just totally thrilled for Team Buster after the amazing double clear - I couldn't be happier for his breeder and owner.

Its been a good couple of days so far at Burghley - have enjoyed watching the main man in the 5* and other clients in the young event horse competition.

While a lot of us are enjoying the sun ( I am loving lots of sea swimming at the moment), it is vital to ensure we take extra measures to ensure our animals are safe.

I am mainly posting this because, yet again today I have seen people walking their dogs at midday when the temperature readings have been over 30 c.

Essentially looking after your animals in hot weather is all about:

Keeping them cool
Keeping them hydrated
Keeping them safe from heat stress

Different breeds and species have different needs, but the key principles are the same.

1. Constant access to fresh, cool water
2. Plenty of shade
3. Avoid unnecessary exercise or handling
4. Cool and ventilate their environment

The signs of heat stress include:

1. Heavy panting, rapid breathing, drooling
2. Lethargy
3. Vomiting and diarrhea
4. Reduced feed intake
5. Collapse / weakness

Extra special considerations need to be taken for:

1. Older, overweight and sick animals
2. Brachycephalic breeds i.e bulldogs, pugs, persian cats
3. Dark or heavy-coated animals

If you suspect your animal has over heated, the advice is very simple. It is vital to get them wet as quickly as possible - bodies cool down a lot quicker as water evaporates off them - this is why humans sweat. Once you have covered them with cold water - get them to the vet.

And remember - missing a few walks or exercise never killed an animal
