Vegan cat foods exist in the USA in 2019 since 35 years.They are legal.They have never had any FDA or any other country food authority recall.There has never been an ASPCA/RSPCA or equivalent animal welfare case against anyone feeding cats or dogs or ferrets etc balanced vegan pet foods that many countries make now since years.

There are no euthanised animals in vegan pet foods...they are closer to “human grade” food ingredients than any animal based pet foods out there.

ALL those people responsible in the FDA for recalls of non vegan pet foods...are imaginary or not doing their jobs...to have never recalled any vegan pet food in 30 years ? to hide from the public the fact that vegan cats are dead or sick on their vegan diets for over 30 years ! ?

I just state the facts and the pet food authority laws regarding the terms "species appropriate" which are that any pet food labelled as CAT or DOG food has to be SPECIES APPROPRIATE for content and digestibility legal nutritional proven requirements.

So it is a MYTH to think people can call vegan or any labelled as CAT or DOG food and sold to the public as not "species appropriate" as logically the laws regarding food labels cover that matter.Regarding what pets people get...well other than banned wild animals protected against human ownership certain species such as wild lions and some endangered species there is absolutely no way any laws would prevent ownership of a domestic breed animal by anyone...domestic species animals are "property" under the law and as such are legally killable as and when the owners please and do...otherwise there would be none killed when dumped unwanted in shelters or any animals killed generally by us humans.

Pets and farm animals are legally simply "property". "chattels" ownership issue nothing to do with ideas about pets having any more rights than a farm animal.

I just saw a video promotion by Dr. Marty Goldstein, who has developed his own cat food product. The claim is great health for cats that eat it, however when you look at the ingredients it is rather shocking. It is almost entirely meat and organs from animals. It even includes salmon which I am guessing is farm raised since wild salmon is both difficult to acquire in today’s dwindling oceans and also very expensive. What is shocking is how this formula is promoted as the most natural and healthy and absolutely NO mention of the toxic chemicals that will be in these meats and eggs that will accumulate in the cats that are eating them. Why is it that so many veterinarians that call themselves “holistic” are not aware of this? It is not a secret.

Because they are eating so high on the food chain (like most people) they will be getting a significant load of these environmental chemicals which eventually have effects on their health. In the first study of its kind, the Environmental Working Group found that American pets are polluted with even higher levels of many of the same synthetic industrial chemicals that researchers have recently found in people.

The results of the study shows that America’s pets are serving as involuntary sentinels of the widespread chemical contamination that scientists increasingly link to a growing array of health problems across a wide range of animals—wild, domesticated and human. Dogs and cats were contaminated with 48 of 70 industrial chemicals tested, including 43 chemicals at levels higher than those typically found in people, according to the study of plastics and food packaging chemicals, heavy metals, fire retardants, and stain-proofing chemicals in pooled samples of blood and urine from 20 dogs and 37 cats collected at a Virginia veterinary clinic.

Teflon chemicals: PFCs (Perfluorochemicals) were 2.4 times higher than in people. Fire retardants: PBDEs (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers): 23.4 times higher than in people. Mercury: 5.4 times higher than in people.

Average levels of many chemicals were substantially higher in pets than is typical for people, with 2.4 times higher levels of stain- and grease-proof coatings (perfluorochemicals) in dogs, 23 times more fire retardants (PBDEs) in cats, and more than 5 times the amounts of mercury, compared to average levels in people found in national studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Environmental Working Group.

It is very important to understand that these chemicals accumulate in the tissues of animals that are picking them up from the environment — animals in pastures and feedlots. When these animals are then killed and eaten by other animals, the dose just increases exponentially.

The highest amount will be on those animals eating the most meat and dairy products as this is where the dose of these substances is the greatest (thousands or millions greater than found in the soil or water).

How can these facts be ignored by veterinarians? It is a mystery to me. It is like a blind spot. Perhaps they think these findings are not real? That the studies flawed? The Environmental Working Group collected blood and urine from dogs and cats to do the analysis. It is difficult to see how it could be done more accurately. Nonetheless, the results are ignored and the message of feeding large quantities of meat to dogs and cats goes on. We can only hope that some day there will be an awakening of understanding
