GP Ballot on Collective Action - NOT A STRIKE
Results of the GP non-statutory ballot of BMA GP partners/
contractors are now available: on a turnout of 67.7%,
98.3% of GPs have voted in favour of taking
one or more of the GPC England’s promoted list of Collective Action.
GPs are NOT going on strike.
This was not a formal Trades Union ballot, though had it been,
the legal voting thresholds would have been met.
GP practices will remain open, and no
proposed action will create a breach of either the national or local contracts GP practices
hold.
GPs will now, incrementally, and collectively, start to work in line with their contracts but this is not a big bang approach analogous to withdrawing labour in an official strike:
No patients care will be put at risk, as no precipitate decisions will be taken and local commissioners, who are responsible for ensuring patients can access NHS services, will be informed of all changes in the way GPs and their practice staff are working.
However, it is surely very revealing that NHS England have expressed concern about the impact of General Practitioners simply choosing to do only what they are contracted and appropriately resourced to do; this demonstrates how our goodwill and commitment to doing the best for our patients has been systematically exploited and relied on.
Underlying all these actions is a determination to reverse the current ”constructive dismissal” of General Practice: currently (2024/25) only 6% of the overall NHS budget
General Practice funding is £107.57 per patient a year is just 30p a day, to provide facilities and staff for the essential healthcare for every patient who needs it.
Practices cannot afford to employ and retain the staff
they need. This financial situation is completely unsustainable and is why General Practice cannot look after patients as they deserve: over 1300 NHS GP practices have been lost since 2015.
With a rising registered population, this means the average number of patients per FTE fully qualified GP has risen to 2300, which is unsafe, and is why patients cannot receive the
care they deserve, and GPs want to provide.
PATIENTS PLEASE STAND WITH YOUR GP SURGERY AND SUPPORT YOUR GPS AS WE TRY TO GET THE ABILITY TO BRING BACK REAL GENERAL PRACTICE WE BOTH WANT AND NEED.
