PODIATRIST.... CHIROPODIST.... ever wondered what the difference is?

I often get asked what the difference is between a Podiatrist and a Chiropodist.. Well, there is essentially no difference in what they do today.

The main difference is the name and history.

✅ Podiatrist
The modern, official title used in the UK and internationally.
Focuses on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot and lower-limb problems.
Must be registered with professional regulators (in the UK, the Health and Care Professions Council).

✅ Chiropodist
An older term that was commonly used in the UK.
Many practitioners trained as chiropodists still use the title, especially in private clinics.
Their work is usually the same as podiatrists — nail care, corns, calluses, verrucas, diabetic foot care, biomechanics, nail surgery etc.

🦶 Why two names?

Around the late 20th century, the profession shifted toward the name podiatry to reflect a broader medical role (biomechanics, sports injuries, surgery, prescribing).

⭐ Simple way to think about it

Chiropodist = older name
Podiatrist = modern professional title
It's that simple.

⚠️ What matters more than the title
Check that they are:

✅Registered with the HCPC (this is extremely important as this guarantees they are:
1. Qualified for your specific issue (sports injury, diabetic foot care, nail surgery and all other foot care.
2. Registered with a governing body, accountable and insured.
3. Trained to the highest standards and ongoing professional training must be taken every year.

I often get asked what the difference is between a Podiatrist/Chiropodist and a foot health practitioner. .

In the UK, Podiatrists and foot health practitioners (FHPs) both work with foot care, but there are important differences in their training, regulation, and scope of practice.

1. Podiatrist (also known as a Chiropodist)
✅ Training & Qualifications:
Must complete a BSc (Hons) Degree in Podiatry, usually 3-4 years including a minimum of a 1000 hours supervised clinical practice.

University education includes anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, biomechanics, and clinical practice.

✅ Regulation:
Statutory regulation by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Legally protected title – only HCPC-registered individuals can call themselves “Podiatrist” or “Chiropodist”.

✅ Scope of Practice:
Can diagnose and treat a wide range of foot and lower limb conditions.

May prescribe certain medications and administer local anaesthetics.

Can undertake minor surgeries.

Often work in NHS settings, private clinics, hospitals, or in sports medicine.

2. Foot Health Practitioner (FHP)
✅ Training & Qualifications:
Typically completes a shorter course or diploma (not a degree) including around a week of supervised training – usually through private training colleges.

Training focuses on routine foot care, such as nail cutting and corn/callus removal.

❌ Regulation:
Not statutorily regulated.

Not a protected title – anyone can legally call themselves an FHP.

May voluntarily register with professional bodies like the British Association of Foot Health Professionals (BAFHP) or Register for Foot Health Practitioners (RFHP).

✅ Scope of Practice:
Provide basic foot care, such as:

Nail trimming

Corn and callus removal

Can assist a Podiatrist in nail surgery, carry out basic foot care on low risk patients (not diabetic etc) and advise on foot hygiene.

❌Cannot diagnose complex conditions, treat medium or high risk patients, perform surgery, or prescribe medications.

If you need more specialised or medical foot care (e.g., diabetic foot assessments, persistent pain, infections, surgery), a Podiatrist is the appropriate professional.
