Spirotech has recently designed, manufactured and installed two large diameter silos for a major worldwide chemical producer, in this instance for the production of rat poison.
The system designed by Spirotech comprises of two storage silos for wheat and flour, each with a storage capacity of 50m3 and suitable for bulk tanker filling by pressurised road tankers utilising an on-board blower.
Each silo is fitted with a reverse jet cleaned filter unit for venting the tanker conveying air and a pressure transmitter to monitor internal pressure. Installed on load cells, which provide a continuous indication of silo contents together with the facility for high and low level interlock set points, the silos are also fitted with a silo auto shut-off system to prevent dust emissions to atmosphere via the pressure relief valve on top of the silo. As the product being handled and stored is capable of forming explosive atmospheres due to the presence of combustible dust in cloud form, the silos are equipped with explosion protection in the form of explosion venting at roof level and all ancillary equipment and instruments fitted to the silos are ATEX certified.

Spirotech has recently completed the installation stage for a major north-eastern water company’s treatment facility. The contract was awarded to Spirotech as two very similar plants had previously been supplied to the same water authority eight years ago which have proved to be very reliable and efficient systems.

The project requirement was to design, manufacture, supply, deliver and mechanically install the equipment for a powder activated carbon system used to treat drinking water. The project design, manufacture and build included systems for storage, conveying and mixing. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) is used in the processing of drinking water at treatment facilities, primarily on a seasonal basis in order to deal with aesthetic problems with the water such as odour and taste issues associated with Geosmin and 2-MIB.

Local business and community working together – Spirotech Group help Cambridgeshire MS Therapy Centre

Spirotech Group was made aware of the issues that the Cambridgeshire MS therapy centre were facing in early May of this year.

The centre had some major challenges from the pandemic including soaring energy prices and a failing heating system which wouldn’t last another winter. The centre’s Chairman, Tim Barke, had real concerns for the future and their ability to continue to provide the much-needed service for MS patients and their families. Tim explained that the new boilers and repairs to the heating system would cost around £30,000, funds they simply didn’t have. Without any local or government funding they felt helpless.

Action was urgently needed!

The board at Spirotech decided they couldn’t see a local charity within the community face the possibility of closure. After explaining the issues to one of Spirotech’s own clients, another locally based company Environmental Product Solutions Ltd, the two businesses both agreed to help.

Following a meeting with the centre’s Tim Barke, it was agreed that Spirotech Group and Environmental Product Solutions would fund the new boiler system and the centre would fund the installation cost. To help with the installation costs, the local community generously stepped in by arranging a fund-raising garden party and a sponsored walk.

A very worthwhile meeting took place at Spirotech Group’s HQ last week as Director Russell Gadsby welcomed Conservative MP candidate Ben Obese-Jecty, a former Army Officer and now Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Huntingdon.

Accompanied on the visit by Cllr Simon Bywater and Cllr Ross Martin, Ben was shown around the design and manufacturing areas before embarking on a lengthy talk with the directors to discuss various issues, both local and national, in relation to the engineering trade.

A new assistant for the Spirotech Group Accounting Team - Sam Isakova has joined Spirotech as an accounting assistant. She has come from a non-accounting background but is currently studying towards her career goal to complete her AAT qualification. Sam will mainly be dealing with credit control but will be looking to progress to learning all aspects of accounts over the course of the next 12 months. Well done to Spirotech’s Sascha & Sean for completing a skydive at Sibson to raise funds for .

Sascha Kennedy and Sean Huckle planned the skydive to raise money for Sue Ryder as a thank you for the help they provided for Sascha’s aunt and Spirotech Director, Katie Wood who sadly passed away last November. Katie had been diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2020 and had received wonderful care from the caring nurses and staff at Sue Ryder.

The skydive raised over £5000 for Thorpe Hall (Sue Ryder) and Sean, Sascha and the Directors at Spirotech would like to say a huge thank you for all the supporters and donations.

Spirotech Group has just completed one of its largest and most technically challenging projects in the UK, for a major paint production company.

The project, located in Sheffield, consists of five Carbon steel (two 150m3 Capacity and three 100m3 Capacity), and a lean phase pneumatic transfer system to transfer product to two 17.5m3 weigh hoppers at a maximum rate of 12TPH. The project was delivered as a turnkey system which included the design, project management, manufacture, mechanical and electrical installation, commissioning and a new independent electrical control system.

Sad news.

The Directors at Spirotech are saddened to announce the passing away yesterday of Finance Director Katie Wood following her brave fight against cancer.

Director David Gadsby said,

"Katie joined us in March in the year 2000 whilst we were in Barnwell, Northants and continued with us all the way until the present date. She started as reception/accounts assistant and worked her way into becoming an integral part of the company finishing as Finance Director. Her contribution to the company cannot be overstated as we would not be where we are today without her dedication. A much loved member of our team she will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure in working with her but especially by both myself and Russell.”

As just one of a handful of companies worldwide who have the resources and skills to manufacture pressurised under licence, Spirotech added another notch to its growing worldwide reputation in the successful design, build and delivery to one of India’s major petrochemical plants, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.
The project (EPCM Services for PX and PTA expansion at Panipat facility) was commissioned in April this year and was driven by the tight deadline to supply seven pressurised screw conveyors to India by the end of September.
The Indian petrochemical facility at Panipat required the screw conveyors for movement of crude terephthalic acid cake, normally transported between rotary driers to feed stacks, and carried out as part of a planned expansion of the facility. Terephthalic acid ( ) is a useful raw material for producing other commercial polymers and Spirotech designed and manufactured three conveyors in 304 grade stainless steel and four conveyors in 316 grade stainless steel.
Spirotech’s design engineers worked closely with Indian Oil to ensure all technical requirements were met, drawing on data and knowledge gathered from over 30 years’ experience working on PTA projects.

Spirotech’s skilled engineers and installers are never thwarted by a challenge and the latest project to refit two operational UK biomass plants was simply taken in their stride as the power plants went offline to enable the team to complete vital upgrades.

The plants where the upgrades were carried out, in Boston and Hull, are operated by Industrial Power Marine, themselves an engineering company based in South Wales and East Midlands. Spirotech, having previously worked on other biomass plants, was the obvious choice for the upgrade work which was primarily a conversion change to alternative fuel, from wood chip to RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel).

Industrial Power Marine called upon Spirotech’s expertise to fabricate and install large robust conveyors to rework the lower feed hopper. The scope of the work included new twin screw feeders of carbon steel, new extension pieces and a new stainless steel 310 injector screw to directly inject product into the hoppers.

Sascha Kennedy is planning a skydive to raise money for Sue Ryder as a thank you for the help they have provided for her auntie and Spirotech Director, Katie Wood who was diagnosed with terminal cancer back in 2020. From 2020 up until now Katie has received care from the team at Sue Ryder and will continue to be cared for by them. Without Sue Ryder she wouldn’t have been able to get the care she needs and the care her loved ones would have wanted her to receive.

Ground Level Testing system.

Spirotech’s team of engineers have recently retro-fitted their bespoke in-house designed Ground Level Testing (GLT) system to two at the Wheal Jane Mine in Cornwall. The silo upgrade project included fitting new filter/venting units, new pressure sensors, new pressure release valves, new silo fill pipe modifications complete with shut-off valves and new silo fill panels and took just under two weeks to complete.

The GLT carries out pre-checks to the silo pressure relief valve, high level probe and pressure monitor prior to commencement of tanker discharge and these checks can be made by the driver via the tanker’s silo fill control panel. The system operates at ground level, reducing the need to physically gain access to the silo roof level and thereby minimising the working at height risks.

Spirotech Group has further built up its strong reputation for high quality design, build and installation competency within the water industry with a project at Invercannie Water Treatment Works in Scotland.

The purpose of the project was to install a new system to achieve a consistent milk of lime slurry at 5% w/w.

This is a two year project for Invercannie Water Treatment Works that will see the complete refurbishment of the existing , with the capacity to produce up to 63 million litres of drinking water a day for the area.
