Dentophobia

Dentophobia is a fear of dentists. While many patients feel embarrassed to admit they have neglected their oral health due to this fear, it is surprisingly common. We’ve helped numerous patients who suffer from dentophobia, and we do everything we can to accommodate their needs.

We have handpicked dentists for our team who take a gentle and calming approach to dentistry, ensuring our patients are comfortable at all times. We can ensure any patient needs are met. From taking breaks through the appointment to the choice of music in the surgery, we can tailor the appointment to you, making sure you are relaxed and happy.

The key is communication; when you book in, let our Reception team know you suffer from dental anxiety, and we shall book a longer appointment slot. Also, don’t be afraid to speak to the dentist about your preferences. Our team here at Ilchester Dental & Implant Centre are lovely and will strive to ensure your needs are met.

Where Does Dental Phobia Come From?

Some of our patients suffer from dental phobia due to past experiences. Dentistry is an ever-progressing field, and therefore, over the years, the standard of care has increased. Some patients have childhood memories of traumatic dental treatments without anaesthesia, but the advancement of dentistry means that this is no longer a method of practice.

Other patients experience phobias as the mouth is a facial feature and can be quite sensitive. As mentioned previously, past trauma can have an impact, and this doesn’t have to pertain to a scary incident with a dentist specifically. Any past experiences with medical procedures that may have caused issues can lead to people not wanting to visit the dentist.

Can I Still Visit The Dentist Even If I Have Neglected My Teeth Due To Dental Phobia?

Absolutely, our goal at Ilchester Dental & Implant Centre is always to ‘save’ teeth where possible. No matter the time between dental visits or the treatment needed, we’re happy to see everyone. There is no need for embarrassment; our dentists are experienced and have seen all the different types of issues. Thanks to this high level of experience, they’re well placed to give you tailored advice to help you improve your oral health.

If My Dental Phobia Is Very Severe, Can I Be Sedated?

If you’re suffering from anxiety and worry in the lead up to dental appointments – and especially treatments – we’d urge you to discuss this with your Dentist. There’s a long list of ways to help deal with and mitigate these feelings, including sedation, and we’d be more than happy to work through your options with you.

If I Prefer Calming Music During My Appointment, Will This Be Accommodated?

Wherever possible, we will do everything we can to accommodate any requests or requirements for patients during their appointment. All our rooms have speakers, so you can request music that you would prefer. Our surgeries also have TVs so we can display calming images or videos if this is something that helps. Every surgery also has a seat for any guests you may want to bring with you, so you can have someone familiar in the room with you.

If I Want To Stop Because I’m Overwhelmed, Can I Ask The Dentist To Stop?

All our dentists and nurses here at Ilchester Dental & Implant Centre are genuinely lovely people and will do everything to make you feel comfortable. Every dentist is so easy to talk to and has endless care and compassion for their patients, so feel free to ask them anything you want the answers to. Where they are able, they can stop treatment when you need a break, but if this is not possible, they will let you know beforehand and try to figure out any solutions to ensure you feel as calm as possible.

I Need Time After My Appointment To Calm Down. Where Can I Wait?

Our Lounge is designed for comfort. You can sit and wait here as long as you need to after treatment, or before if you want to arrive early. Our lovely Front of House team can check in on you to see how you’re doing, and we have water and Glucose tablets in case you feel a little wobbly afterwards. We can also call anyone you need if you prefer someone to collect you.

Private Dentistry – How Is It Different to NHS Dentistry?

As a Private Dental Practice in Somerset, one of the most frequent calls we receive is from prospective patients looking for an NHS Dentist. Whilst we’re unable to help with this, as we are and always have been a Private Practice, once we explain to patients how Private Dentistry works and the benefits entailed, this usually leads to them joining our fantastic Practice!

One of the key differences between NHS and Private Dentistry is the appointment timeline. On the NHS, even if you can get into a dentist to begin with, the average National waiting time for a routine check-up is around 4 weeks. However, Private Dentistry doesn’t suffer from these restrictions. Thanks to diary management and a desire to care for our patients in an expedient manner, Ilchester Dental & Implant Centre is able to offer appointments within a week on most occasions.

If you’re suffering from a dental emergency, this can often be shortened down to an appointment on the same day or the next day at worst. NHS dentistry, due to funding and staffing, is unable to offer such accessibility.

Once you make it over to an appointment, you can again notice a difference between NHS and Private dentistry. NHS appointments are, by their nature, scheduled to be quick and work on maximum efficiency. Therefore, you’re usually considered spoiled if you get 10 minutes for a routine appointment on the NHS.

However, on a Private basis, we’re focused on taking our time and offering a thorough and enjoyable experience, in a calm and measured way. For the countless number of the population who suffer with dental anxiety or fears, this extra time and ability to move at the speed our patients prefer means a visit to the dentist no longer needs to be a scary rush-job, and can instead be a pleasant and calm experience.

The level and range of treatment offered also differ across the two provisions. Under the NHS, the key is examinations, followed by as minimal treatment as is feasible, due to the need to extend funding across as broadly as possible. Thankfully, in Private Practice, we’re not restricted in the same fashion. This means we’re able to offer a much greater range of preventative and restorative solutions, letting you keep your natural teeth for longer. If that is unfortunately not possible, Private dentistry also has a far, far greater range of Prosthodontic options – ways to replace your teeth, once they’ve been removed. Thanks to a lack of limitations on the materials and suppliers we can use, our crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants are frequently indistinguishable from your natural neighbouring teeth.

Finally, one of the more common complaints of NHS dentistry: knowing your dentist. Due to higher staff turnover and a lack of flexibility in NHS diaries, you can often see a different dentist at every appointment you attend in an NHS Practice. Dentistry is a deeply personal and close-up undertaking, so being greeted by a stranger at each visit can be incredibly anxiety-inducing for even the best of us.

Under Private Dentistry, you find that not only do Dentists tend to remain with Practices for a much longer period of time, but also that the best Private Dentists are also willing to move around their availability and diary to accommodate their patients. This allows you to build up a greater relationship with your dentist and have full faith and trust that they are working towards the same desired outcome as you. Equally, if you find yourself dissatisfied with the specific dentist you have seen, for any reason, you are able to move to a colleague easily and without issue – an option not usually afforded under NHS Dentistry.

Tongue Health

Learn how to maintain optimal tongue health, recognise early signs of problems, and adopt daily habits that support overall oral hygiene and wellness.

Dental Crowns in Renton, WA
Oral hygiene encompasses your whole mouth, and while the majority of patients visit us due to an issue with their teeth, your tongue is an integral part of your dental health and should therefore be cared for.

Key advice that our dentists give is to always ensure you brush your tongue, as it can help remove harmful bacteria, which leads to fresher breath and can help improve your sense of taste. Some toothbrushes have a ridged texture on the back of the toothbrush head, which can be used to brush your tongue. However, you can also use the bristles to brush along the surface. Ensure you use a small amount of toothpaste when brushing your tongue to help remove debris and bacteria.

Although you may not know it, it is advised that you brush your tongue as much as you brush your teeth, and you can also use a tongue scraper, as they can improve tongue health and help remove dead cells. As well as brushing your tongue, scraping can also ensure fresher breath. Tongue scrapers work a little differently as they scrape across the tongue, removing anything that has collected on the tongue. Tongue scrapers should be made from plastic, washed after every use, and used gently. If any bleeding or soreness occurs, the scraper is being used too vigorously and causing damage.

If you are worried about your tongue, it is advised to visit your dentist to ensure there are no issues. A tongue should be pink, as this indicates it is healthy. Different colours can indicate certain issues, such as:

Red – some illnesses cause the tongue to appear redder than pink.

White – can indicate thrush, or if it is a white coating, it is usually a sign of poor oral hygiene or dehydration.

Yellow – can indicate illnesses such as liver problems or poor oral hygiene.

Black – can be due to trapped bacteria and debris, which occurs due to poor oral hygiene, medications, and smoking.

Purple – poor circulation or heart conditions.

Colour can be due to various reasons, and the above list is just a suggestion for what each colour could mean.

At Ilchester Dental & Implant Centre, many patients visit us due to severe dental pain, and as the mouth is a sensitive area, any amount of dental pain can prevent patients from going about their normal routines. Although it is a rare occurrence to have patients visit with tongue pain, any dental issue can, of course, inhibit being able to eat and enjoy food. Studies have shown that regularly cleaning your tongue can improve your taste, making it just as important as brushing your teeth.

Did you know… taste buds regenerate every 10–14 days?

The basis of good oral hygiene is regular dentist visits, and although these tips can help ensure your dental health improves, the regular visits can detect numerous other issues that may arise, even if oral hygiene is optimal. We offer hygiene appointments for £65, and these can make a huge difference to your oral hygiene. Our hygienist can also suggest any specific tips that could best benefit your oral health.

Our routine hygiene appointments are 20 minutes, but we also offer 30-minute appointments for patients who need a more in-depth clean, as well as Airflo, which helps to remove staining, and, where required, we offer periodontal treatment.

As the teeth are such an important part of oral hygiene, it can be easy to forget that the tongue also needs attention to ensure the best dental care. As mentioned, a healthy tongue should be pink, but it should also be covered in a rough texture of bumps called papillae. The surface of your tongue is, therefore, a perfect place for bacteria and other debris to develop, so make sure you remember to brush your tongue.
