Ever wanted a bit of an insight in to what being a Slimming World member is all about?
Well firstly, there’s the food! It’s NOT A DIET! It’s an incredibly clever calorie controlled plan that looks at how a food fills you up. If it’s filling and low in calories it gets a badge of honor called a Free Food (this includes things like meat, fish, beans and pulses, starchy veg, rice, pasta and grains). These can be eaten freely (no weighing here!) to satisfy your appetite. Then we have Healthy Extras, weighed and measured to protect your weight loss, that ensure your plan has enough calcium, fibre and other important vitamins and minerals. On top of that there are those foods and drinks that are high in calories but don’t fill you up, like alcohol, chocolate, cake and other high fat, high sugar items - these are still allowed but in measured amounts. So in other words, a perfectly balanced plan that is BACKED BY SCIENCE AND LOVED BY MILLIONS!
Next is the group experience, that’s one of the things we’re famous for! Imagine learning to drive….you wouldn’t have one lesson then go out and be able to navigate the roads! Group is a bit like learning to drive, you need the lessons and practice to become able to fly solo, so although not every member does stay to group, those that do get much better results - in fact over 4 times the weight loss so therefore hit THEIR chosen Target much sooner than those that choose to go it alone. It’s a place of safety, fun and learning with a consultant (me!) with 15 year’s experience who knows how it feels. We laugh, we sometimes cry, but there’s always a nugget or more of inspiration that can help us move forwards. Also, just to add, no one will ever know your weight - this is a massive point. Also we never shame or humiliate ANYONE especially if they’ve gained weight (as this is part of that learning process I spoke about earlier - it’s needed so that you know how to cope on similar situations going forward).
You would think this is enough, but oh no! As part of your membership you get access to an incredible set of resources. A website and app that cover everything from recipes to psychology (something our consultants have been trained in for over 50 years), a fabulous podcast (every other week is members’ only), and even if you’re not a member you can get access to our You Tube channel that shows you how to make recipes, the podcast fortnightly and the Blog. We want to help EVERYONE to shed the guilt and shame that being overweight can bring.
We can help pregnant and breastfeeding ladies (were approved by the Royal College of Midwives), people with diabetes (we work in partnership with Diabetes UK), we have members with celiac disease, heart conditions, and all sorts of other diseases - I myself am currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, so I get it.
Whatever your budget or dietary choices, this plan can be tailored to suit YOUR needs, honestly one size does not fit all but this plan can be adapted to suit everyone without the need for going hungry.
Activity you may cry! We encourage all of our members to try to fit in activity at their level and pace, when they are ready. Anything goes, from walking to running marathons, using tins of beans to exercise at home or going to the gym - again, your choice in what you do!
