We need to talk about Su***de.
Last year I undertook training in Su***de intervention, which has been invaluable. The very word can cause upset and uncomfortable feelings, but here are some facts:-
Su***de is the biggest killer of men under the age of 40.
Society is now moving away from the term "committed su***de" to eliminate stigma, the preferred wording is now "died by su***de" or "took his or her own life" Ultimately, death by su***de is death caused by mental health problems and we need to be mindful of this.
People who talk about su***de do sometimes act on their feelings — it's a common myth that they don't. It's best to assume that they are telling the truth and arrange appropriate support. If someone is feeling suicidal, you asking and mentioning the word is not going to make the individual at any more risk of attempting it, in fact, open, honest and non-judgmental conversations are exactly what is needed.
