Capoeira Angola - What is it about this art that feels almost impossible to put into words?
The wonder, the challenge, the joy it brings me… Is it a dance? A fight? Embodied movement, a ritual, a community?
With intention, Capoeira Angola is all of the above, and so much more.
Some things, unless expressed with deep care and skill, (shoutout to Ana Paz and Gina for the PHD’s) are better left unspoken or unpictured, because words and images rarely capture the magic that truly exists in the moment.
Still, for some time now, I’ve felt the call to share my love for Capoeira Angola. It has given me so much:
- the challenge of learning techniques upside down,
- the beauty of music and movement,
- the power of using my voice,
- the courage to face my fears,
- the gift of community.
Capoeira Angola has a way of reflecting life in just a few moments. Just when you think you know; it humbles you, reminding you how much there is still to learn.
So first, I give thanks to myself - for pushing through self-limiting beliefs that have followed me for so long.
I offer reverence to those who came before, who carried Capoeira Angola through generations to what we know today.
To those who continue to uphold this sacred art, through all the work and effort the Mestres and Professores I see the sacrifice, it’s real and I am deeply appreciative and grateful.
Capoeira Angola itself, thank you for the solace you provide, for holding me even when I could barely hold myself.
And of course my Mestre Rilene Sousa, Eon and my group Angoleiros de Kanaga
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
