We've received the below request. If anyone feels they can assist, please let us know.

"My name is John Davidson and I am the speaker secretary of the Exeter Forum Society, a society for people in Exeter and the surrounding area who are retired, semi-retired or flexible working.

We meet every week for a presentation/talk on a topical subject; historical scientific, medical, sociological or environmental. The average audience is around 70-80 people each week.

We meet Wednesday mornings in Central Exeter at the Mint Methodist Church, Fore Street, Exeter, EX4 3AT which has good projection and sound facilities

I am looking for a speaker who can give an illustrated talk on the ships called HMS Exeter and their links with the city, or more specifically on one ship such as the Type 42 destroyer.

The interest was prompted by the model of the wartime HMS Exeter going on display in the Guildhall and requests from members. I have been researching the topic myself, but it would be much better to have someone from the Royal Navy!

Currently the date of Wednesday morning 21 May 2025 is available, when we want to have a talk linked to the sea, just before Exeter’s Maritime Festival in early June.

I have also got a number of dates available in the autumn of 2025.

Please let me know if someone from your association is able to do a talk and what date/month you would prefer. The Exeter Forum can offer a fee of £ 50.00, or a donation to your chosen charity if you wish and reasonable travel expenses."

48 years ago today I walked through the gates of HMS Raleigh after an overnight train journey from Kirkcaldy.

That was the start of a relatively short 9 year career in the Navy, but it was also the beginning of a foundation that I have lived by since and shaped me to be who I am today.

If I lived my life over again I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Great days and a great life with some great people, many of whom still remain as firm friends today.
