You've been putting in the work in therapy, but you might be wondering:

8. How do I know therapy is working?

Progress in therapy isn’t always a dramatic, life-changing moment. Sometimes, it’s a series of small, subtle shifts that add up over time. Here are a few signs that therapy is on the right track:

You’re Noticing Patterns.
You're starting to see why you react the way you do in certain situations, or you're recognising old habits and thought processes. This awareness is the first step toward change.

You're Handling Challenges Differently.
A stressful day at work or an argument with a loved one might still be tough, but you find yourself coping in a healthier way. Maybe you're less reactive, you're not bottling up emotions, or you're using a coping skill you learned in a session.

Your Relationships Are Improving.
You might find it easier to communicate, set boundaries, or feel more connected to the people you care about.

You Feel More Present.
The constant chatter in your mind might be quieter, or you feel a greater sense of calm and clarity. You might be less preoccupied with the past or worried about the future.

You're Feeling a Wider Range of Emotions.
This might sound counterintuitive, but sometimes progress means allowing yourself to feel sadness, anger, or frustration without being overwhelmed by them. It's a sign of emotional growth.

Remember, therapy is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate the small victories, because they are the foundation of lasting change. And if you’re ever unsure, it’s always a good idea to bring this very question up with your therapist, that in itself is a sign you’re engaged in the process!

Sometimes we all need a little extra support – whether that’s coping with anxiety, grief, loss or just the everyday stress of life. Counselling is a safe space to be heard without judgement.

We have sessions available on weekdays and Saturday mornings, and we’d love to hear from you if you feel ready to talk.

Remember, it’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed sometimes – and you don’t have to face it all alone. 💛

Sometimes the biggest difference we can make for someone in distress is simply to ask, “Are you okay?”

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, let’s take a moment to notice the signs that someone might be struggling and feel it's impossible to manage alone.

Look out for someone who:

-> Withdraws from friends, family or social activities.

-> Shows dramatic mood changes or increased agitation.

-> Talks about feeling hopeless, trapped, or like a burden to others.

-> Begins using more alcohol or drugs, acts recklessly or gives away possessions.

-> Finds it hard to sleep or sleeps much more than usual.

These signs might be subtle, and everyone experiences distress differently, but picking up on something out of character can be important.

Asking is Powerful
You don’t need to have all the answers. Just reaching out, listening without judgement, and showing care can offer a lifeline, even when it’s as simple as asking, “Are you sure you’re okay?” or “Is there anything you want to talk about?”

Evidence shows that starting the conversation does not make the situation worse, it actually offers hope and connection.

Urgent Help from Samaritans
If you, or someone you care about, is in immediate distress, remember help is available. The Samaritans are there 24/7 for urgent support, no matter how big or small the problem feels.

Speaking up is a positive step. Support is available locally in Keighley, West Yorkshire, the surrounding areas, and online.

Supporting Employees’ Mental Health During Difficult Times

Work can often feel like a heavy load when life outside of it is already overwhelming. Many employees struggle quietly with stress, anxiety, loneliness or low mood, and it can affect their wellbeing and their ability to focus at work.

One of the most valuable things a business can do is to show employees that it’s okay to talk about mental health. Simple steps like encouraging open conversations, being flexible when someone is having a difficult day, and creating a culture where support is available can make a real difference.

At ACT Counselling, we’re here to support local businesses in Keighley and the West Yorkshire area with an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). This means your staff can access caring, low-cost counselling either online or in person when they need someone to talk to.

Investing in your team’s wellbeing isn’t just good for them—it helps create a healthier, happier workplace for everyone.

👉 Could your business benefit from offering extra support to your staff during tough times?

Going to therapy is a brave step, and for many, it's about exploring difficult parts of our lives. But what happens if therapy triggers painful memories?

7. What happens if therapy triggers painful memories?

This is a very common and valid concern. It’s completely normal to feel nervous about revisiting the past. Here's what you should know:

Feeling Triggered is a Sign of Progress (Even if it feels awful).
It means you're reaching the core of the issue. A good counsellor will see this not as a setback, but as a key moment in the healing process.

Your Counsellor is Prepared for This.
They are trained to create a safe space and help you navigate these moments. They will not push you further than you can handle. They can help you with grounding techniques, breathing exercises, and ways to manage intense emotions in the moment.

You Are in Control.
You can always say "I need to take a break" or "I'm not ready to talk about this right now." Therapy is a collaborative process, and you get to set the pace.

It’s Important to Talk About It.
If a memory comes up outside of a session, bring it up with your counsellor. Acknowledging the trigger is a crucial part of working through it.

Remember, therapy is about processing pain in a safe, controlled environment so that it no longer has power over you. It's about moving from surviving to healing. If you're considering therapy, please don't let this fear hold you back. The support is there to help you through it.

The 5th of September is a special reminder of the power of kindness and community. Charities and Community Interest Companies (CICs) play such an important role in supporting people when life feels heavy. Whether it’s helping those facing loneliness, grief, or financial struggles, or offering a safe space to talk, these organisations bring light into difficult times.

Here in Keighley, the Mary Calvert Project (CIC) is working hard to make a difference. We know that many people are struggling with stress, isolation, and uncertainty, and no one should have to go through that alone. The Project encourages people from all walks of life to find support, connection, and hope.

💛 Could you get involved?

Your time, your voice, or a small donation can help ensure more people get the support they need. Together, we can build a stronger, kinder community where no one feels left behind.

September is Cancer Awareness Month, and for many this can bring mixed emotions. Cancer doesn’t just affect the person with the diagnosis – it touches families, friends, loved ones, and whole communities. If you, or someone close to you, have been impacted by cancer, you may know how overwhelming the journey can feel. Worry, fear, exhaustion, or even feeling helpless are all very common reactions.

Online therapy, has become an increasingly popular and accessible option for mental health support.

6. Can I do all my sessions over the internet? Is it effective?

The short answer to "Can I do all my sessions over the internet?" is yes, for many people and for many types of therapy. The question of whether it's effective, however, requires a bit more nuance.

How Does Online Therapy Work?

Online therapy typically uses video conferencing platforms, phone calls, or secure messaging to connect you with a therapist. This can be a game-changer for people who live in rural areas, have busy schedules, or face mobility issues. You can have a session from the comfort of your own home, a quiet office space, or anywhere with a reliable internet connection.

Is Online Therapy Effective?

Research and clinical experience show that for many common mental health issues, online therapy is just as effective as traditional in-person sessions. Studies have found it to be a successful treatment for, anxiety, stress, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), relationship issues and couples counselling and panic disorders.

The effectiveness largely depends on the individual, the therapeutic approach, and the quality of the connection you build with your therapist. The core of therapy, the trust, rapport, and open communication, can be built just as well through a screen as it can in a room.

When Might In-Person Therapy Be a Better Choice?

While online therapy is highly effective for many, it's not a perfect fit for everyone or every situation. In-person therapy might be a better option if you're dealing with severe mental health conditions, are at high risk of self-harm, or have a strong preference for face-to-face interaction. Some people simply feel more comfortable and connected in a shared physical space. Furthermore, if you can't find a confidential space to talk freely, online therapy may not be the best fit.

The Bottom Line:

Online therapy is a legitimate and effective way to receive support. It offers flexibility, convenience, and access to a wider pool of specialists. When considering online therapy, think about your personal needs, the nature of your concerns, and what would make you feel most comfortable and safe. The best approach is the one that you can stick with and that allows you to build a strong, trusting relationship with your therapist, whether they are in the next room or a different city.
