Behind door 23 is Goredale Scar.

Located just on the outskirts of Malham, this impressive natural feature was formed on the Middle Craven Fault. Unlike the Cove, however, the torrents of glacial meltwater that flowed over it cut down through faults in the rock. Successive Ice Ages have carved it deeper and deeper over thousands of years to create the deep gorge we see today. It was not formed by a giant cave collapsing as some have suggested. However, several smaller caves collapsing over the centuries probably contributed to the gorge being so deep.

The water that flows over the waterfalls at the heart of the ravine is rich in dissolved limestone. This has precipitated out onto the mossy rocks to create the soft tufa screen that is such a feature at Gordale. Climbing the footpath up damages the tufa so please avoid doing so.(yorkshiredales.org.uk)

This can be seen as part of the Hike Yorkshire Malham Circular Walk. However, following a rock slide in September the Scar will be closed until May 2026 at the earliest, so check prior.

Behind door 22 is Troller's Gill.

Troller's Gill is a picturesque, often dry limestone gorge near Appletreewick. It is famous for its folklore of trolls, pixies, and the legendary spectral dog, the Barghest, said to have inspired The Hound of the Baskervilles. A great thrill of a hike which has rocky scrambles, caves, abandoned mine workings and a disappearing stream.
Our Hike Yorkshire walk takes the Parcevall Hall tearooms, Troller's Gill and ends at one of the village pubs in Appletreewick.

๐ŸŽ„Today's Christmas Calendar of Hikes in Yorkshire:๐ŸŽ„
Behind door 21 is Beacon Hill, Halifax.

The name โ€œBeacon Hillโ€ relates to the network of beacons which historically conveyed news around the country, both in times of celebration and crisis. In 1588 the Halifax beacon was one of the series that were used to warn of the Spanish Armada and was on alert status during the Napoleonic wars in the 1790โ€™s to 1815 when it would have warned of invasion.

Bonfires and beacons have been lit on this hill to mark Royal Jubilees and Coronations, the peace celebrations at the end of the First and Second World wars and the arrival of the 21st Century.

It's a pretty tough but beautiful walk from Shibden Park, along an old packhorse route, takes you past a folly and through the heather up to the top of the hill. There stands a viewing platform which was commissioned by the Rotary Club to celebrate 100 years of service to the town. An ideal place for a picnic while taking in the many landmarks and features that can be seen in the distance.

Behind door 20 Hebden Bridge.

Hebden Bridge was a farming community dating at least to the Saxons, although into the Norman period, with sheep-rearing the chief occupation in the area, it remained less significant than the hillside settlements of Heptonstall and Cragg Vale.

Manufacturing thrived in the area in the 15th Century, based on domestic hand-loom weaving , producing rough woollen cloths called 'kerseys'. With industrialisation, the need for water in the production process led to the building of mills alongside the river and Hebden Bridge, in the valley, grew rapidly. Industry was not limited to woollen textiles but also included the production of cotton cloth, and there were also silk mills, dye-works and iron foundries.

The Rochdale Canal, opened in 1798, vastly improved transportation to and from the area and ensured the progress of industry. In 1841, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway opened its line through the Calder Valley, further improving transport links.

Famed recently for TV shows Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack, Last Tango in Halifax and more recently Riot Women.

Now a lovely market town with artisan shops, art galleries and thriving nightlife.

Hike Yorkshire have a lovely circular walk taking in Heptonstall and some of the Pennine Way, and finishing in the town at one of the many lovely independent coffee shops.

Behind door 19 is Robin Hoods Bay.

Robin Hood's Bay is a historic, picturesque fishing village famous for its steep, winding, cobbled streets, it's smugglers' past, and stunning beach.

It sits in the North York Moors National Park, and offers an array of charming, quaint shops, pubs and cafes.

There's many opportunities to hike in the area with coastal walks like the Cleveland Way and it is the end destination of the Coast to Coast path if starting in St. Bees.

Today's Christmas Calendar of Hikes in Yorkshire:๐ŸŽ„
Behind door 18 is Haworth.

Haworth is a village located between Keighley and Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. Famous globally as the home of the Brontรซ sisters (Charlotte, Emily, and Anne), and is set amidst the dramatic moorlands that inspired their novels like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights.

Visitors to the village usually explore the Brontรซ Parsonage Museum, ride the vintage Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, wander the cobbled Main Street, and hike the surrounding Pennine moors to sites like the Brontรซ Waterfall and Top Withens where the sisters were said to have sat and wrote some of their novels. A lovely village to visit at any time of year bust especially near Christmas when a brass band plays Christmas carols and the quaint shop windows sparkle with fairy lights.
