🎙️ From our latest Care Podcast episode with Skills for Care…

💭 “What should families ask a care provider about training?”

In this clip, we share a simple but important piece of advice: don’t just assume, ask the question.

✨ Things to look out for:
• How carers are trained beyond the basics
• What induction new staff receive
• How providers support ongoing development

Because the quality of care your loved one receives starts with how well carers are supported and trained 💙

It wasn’t just new Caregivers on training last week… we also welcomed a brand new training dummy to the team (very quiet, but a great listener).

It’s already helping the team practise safely, build confidence, and keep improving those hands-on skills that matter every day.

Now the big question… what should we name them? 👀

There’s a reason some Caregivers choose roles where people truly come first.

Where care isn’t just about getting through visits, but about building real relationships and taking the time to do things properly.

Where consistency matters, small changes are noticed, and you can see the difference you’re making day to day.

It’s a more considered way of working. And for many Caregivers, it’s what’s been missing.

If you’re looking for a role like that, we’d like to hear from you.

In our new video, we talk about what’s really happening when someone living with dementia becomes distressed.

It’s easy to think it’s about what’s being said. But often, distress is a form of communication 💬

It might be pain or discomfort.
Too much noise or too many people.
Or simply feeling overwhelmed.

In those moments, the instinct is often to step in and reassure. But sometimes, the most helpful first step is to pause ⏸️

That pause gives you time to look for what might be causing the distress. And when those things are addressed, things often settle without needing to explain or persuade.

If you do respond, keep it simple. Slow. Calm. Less can often help more.

Mark, one of our Caregivers in Solihull, has been nominated by his client for the Spotlight in Excellence Award for March. It says a lot about the kind of support he gives and the relationship he’s built 🤗

This photo says it all - just a lovely connection between Mark and his client.

Very well deserved, Mark, and thank you for everything you do 🧡

In the latest episode of the Care Conversations podcast, we talk about what families often underestimate when caring for a loved one at home 🏡

Supporting someone safely takes more than good intentions. From managing medication to handling falls, there’s a level of training and awareness that many people don’t realise until they’re in that position.

Even something that feels natural, like helping someone up after a fall, can cause harm without the right approach ⚠️

It’s a simple reminder that great care involves knowing how to help safely, for both of you 🤝

Sundowning describes changes that can happen later in the day for someone living with dementia, such as increased confusion, restlessness, or anxiety.

🌅 It often happens because several things have built up through the day, including tiredness, changes in light, and unmet needs like hunger or thirst.

🎥 In this video, Jo Cleary explains why sundowning happens and what can help.

People, above all else

Founded on personal experience

Unique Senior Care was founded in 2011, by Philip Wright-Howarth and Philip Maundrill. Both have, at some point, been responsible for a loved one in need of care. At Unique Senior Care we therefore have an intimate understanding of what quality care should look like, and the peace of mind this brings to family members, as well as the person being cared for. This has been a key driver throughout the business’ history and continues to underpin all aspects of the work we do.

What makes us Unique?

It is without doubt the people we care for, our staff and the quality of the services we provide. Every member of our team shares the same ethos of putting ‘People, above all else’. We believe that by supporting older people to remain in their own home, we can enable them to live more fulfilling lives, and our care is always tailored to meet the individual needs of our clients. Families will have the peace of mind that their loved ones are in excellent hands. As a result, we have built a reputation as a care company that specialises in one thing: people.
