On March 30th at 2239hrs the team were tasked to a distress beacon being activated in the bay off Kilkeel Harbour.

Kilkeel RNLI was requested with a shoreline coastal search underway by the team at all access points from Carlingford Lough to the Bloody Bridge in Newcastle.

HM Coastguard fixed wing aircraft R226 from Prestwick was tasked by Belfast Coastguard to assist in the search.

After a thorough search of the area from all assets the team were stood down at 0054hrs and returned to base.

This is the second time within a number of weeks that this particular distress beacon has initiated quite substantial searches.

The team welcomed the arrival of the first in the uk rapid response CRB ( Coastguard Rescue Bike ).

This strategic decision has been made to enable an incident commander to be dispatched from our area to a major incident ahead of the CRT’s arrival.

This will only bolster the operational area’s capabilities.

Two of the team have undergone significant training with the bike going live on April 1st.

Only a fool could turn this opportunity down…

At 0400hrs on January 1st 2026 the team were tasked along with Newcastle CRT by Belfast Coastguard to support Police Newry, Mourne & Down with reports of a high risk missing person.

While travelling to scene Kilkeel Alpha requested the launch of Newcastle RNLI.

While on scene L&MPS procedure was deployed with two search teams carrying out “hasty” searches of the Harbour area across the promenade to the Slieve Donard Hotel, with Newcastle Lifeboat carrying out a search just off the shore.

Additional support teams Bangor Coastguard Rescue Team and Portaferry Coastguard Rescue Team were requested to provide more resource on foot along with R199 from Prestwick.

As searches were ongoing along with Police K9 teams welcome news came through that the missing person had been located safe well outside our search area.

All teams stood down and returned to base at 0700hrs.

We would like to note a well done to Newcastle RNLI on the first shout on their new Atlantic 85, we wish them all the best with it.

In light of tragic events on the East Devon coast over the past week, we are urging everyone to please take extra care if you’re visiting the beach or coast over the festive period. Conditions remain unpredictable, and your safety must come first.

Our thoughts are with those who are missing, their families, and everyone affected. We also want to acknowledge our emergency service colleagues who spent much of their Christmas Day searching in challenging conditions. Their dedication and resilience has not gone unnoticed.

Please look out for one another and stay safe. We ask any comments made are respectful.

Please if organising a swimming event only do so if there are appropriate safety precautions in place.

☎️ In a coastal emergency, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

We were proud to have Kilkeel 03 Alan, representing the team at the NI RBL Festival of Remembrance in Belfast this weekend.

October 25th holds a special place for Alan as this is the 1st anniversary of returning home from hospital from a substantial cancer surgery.

Alan has come from strength to strength on his road to recovery and recently even while off duty, rescued a 5 year old out of Annalong harbour along with a young man.

Well done Alan keep up the good work…

2 young boys lives saved…

At 1629hrs on Sunday Sept 21st, the team were tasked to reports of two paddleboarders in difficulty on Carlingford Lough.

As we arrived on scene we were able to get eyes on with the casualties spotted by our OIC Kilkeel Bravo.

Shortly after spotting the casualties we were able to direct our colleagues Kilkeel RNLI onto them who scooped two young brothers clinging to a paddle board out of the water.

The team made our way to Warrenpoint marina where the two boys were treated for exposure and hypothermia by Kilkeel CRT and Kilkeel RNLI.

The boys family members rushed the boys to hospital where the welcome news came late this evening that the boys are ok.

With a flat calm day, an off the shore wind and undercurrents it is important to not understimate the dangers of Carlingford Lough.

Two lives saved today.
