Breathing is one of the simplest yet most powerful tools for calming the mind and body because it directly influences the nervous system. Here’s how you can use your breath to create peaceful feelings:

1. Understand Why It Works
• Activates the parasympathetic nervous system – Slow, deep breathing tells your body it’s safe, reducing stress hormones.
• Focuses your mind – When you pay attention to breathing, you shift attention away from anxious thoughts.
• Balances oxygen and carbon dioxide – This stabilizes heart rate and creates a sense of calm.

2. Simple Techniques for Peaceful Breathing

a. Box Breathing (4-4-4-4)
1. Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 counts.
2. Hold your breath gently for 4 counts.
3. Exhale slowly through the mouth for 4 counts.
4. Pause for 4 counts, then repeat.
(Great for when you feel tense or overwhelmed.)

b. Extended Exhale (4-6 Breathing)
1. Inhale gently through the nose for 4 counts.
2. Exhale slowly for 6 counts (or longer).
3. Repeat for a few minutes.
(The longer exhale signals safety to the brain – ideal before sleep or during anxiety.)

c. Belly Breathing (Diaphragmatic Breathing)
1. Place one hand on your belly, one on your chest.
2. Inhale through your nose, letting your belly rise (your chest stays fairly still).
3. Exhale slowly through pursed lips, feeling your belly fall.
4. Continue for 5–10 breaths.
(Soothes the nervous system and brings immediate calm.)

d. 5-Senses + Breath Grounding
1. Take one slow deep breath.
2. Notice 5 things you can see, 4 you can feel, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste.
3. Breathe deeply again.
(Combines mindfulness with breathing to anchor you in the present moment.)

3. Daily Practice for Lasting Peace
• Practice for 5 minutes in the morning to set a calm tone for the day.
• Use it before stressful events (meetings, conversations, driving).
• Pair it with a word or image (e.g., inhale “peace,” exhale “tension”).

It’s been too hot the past few Mondays! Last night wasn’t as bad, but last week?? Wow…sweat dripping from my forehead, my nose, hands sliding along the mat….but wee still did it. 🙏

Very quiet class in Kilmarnock tonight, which was nice.

I REALLY enjoyed that. So much so I’m going to do the very same in Catrine tomorrow evening and Friday evening at Netherthird.

5 wee mini flows within the overall class, it was peaceful at times, energetic at others and always sweaty! 😂

The yoga buzzz is in full effect right now, happily “yoga stoned”. 😍

How would I describe class on Monday night? Hmm…hamstring stretchingly good, I think that works.

There was a beautiful symmetry to it — we began in a gentle forward fold and returned to it at the end, feeling the difference in our bodies.

Along the way, we flowed through a series of poses designed to open up and lengthen the hamstrings, gradually building warmth and release.

It was a grounding, mindful session that reminded us how even simple movements can bring deep shifts when done with intention.

I’ve started community yoga classes with my work, yesterday evening we were in Auchinleck, in partnership with Auchinleck Community Development Initiative at the Boswell Centre.

Wow, what a fantastic turnout! Some practicing yogis and some complete beginners…which makes it a challenge to lead the class, but I think I got it right.

Great feedback after the class and I’m looking forwards to being back in 2 weeks. ❤️🙏❤️

Class felt sooo good last night. Well I think so anyway. 😂

I’ve really got no idea what was different if I’m honest, perhaps I just really needed to stretch and breathe.

Perhaps it was the use of some yoga bricks, the supported bridge pose felt wonderful…I could have stayed in it all night. 🙏❤️🙏

I keep forgetting about this page. 🫣🫣🤣Good to be back on our mats last night. ❤️🙏❤️

Last nights yoga team during relaxation at the end of class; don’t you just love yoga nidra?

Yoga Nidra, also known as “yogic sleep,” is a guided meditation practice that brings deep relaxation while maintaining awareness. It has several benefits for both physical and mental well-being:

1. Deep Relaxation and Stress Reduction

Yoga Nidra helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress hormones like cortisol. It can relieve anxiety, tension, and chronic stress.

2. Improved Sleep and Insomnia Relief

By promoting deep relaxation, it helps with sleep disorders and improves sleep quality, making it easier to fall and stay asleep.

3. Enhanced Mental Clarity and Focus

Since Yoga Nidra brings the brain into a restful but aware state, it enhances cognitive function, improves concentration, and sharpens mental clarity.

4. Emotional Healing and Trauma Release

It can help process suppressed emotions, reduce emotional reactivity, and promote inner balance, making it beneficial for those dealing with PTSD or emotional trauma.

5. Increased Mindfulness and Self-Awareness

Yoga Nidra brings a deep connection with oneself, encouraging self-inquiry and self-acceptance.

6. Physical Healing and Pain Relief

It supports the body’s natural healing processes, reduces inflammation, and can aid in pain management, particularly for chronic conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia.

7. Boosts Creativity and Problem-Solving

By accessing a state between wakefulness and sleep, Yoga Nidra stimulates the subconscious mind, unlocking creativity and fresh perspectives.

8. Balances the Nervous System

By shifting brainwaves to slower, more restorative states (alpha and theta), Yoga Nidra helps regulate the nervous system and promotes long-term well-being.

It’s usually everyone’s favourite part of class. 😍

Yup…we’re back!

I’ve missed my classes at All Ability Circuits & Fitness. I needed to get back, but not to where I was. So I reached out to the guys, and girls, who were attending my classes to see if they would be up for combining the classes into one. No more men only on a Monday night - it’s open to everyone.

So Monday the 13th, 19:30 - 20:30 we begin again.

I’ve tried to sound all ‘yogic’ with my posts on here. I see lots of other yoga pages and the language used; I’m a scheme boy. I talk like one, I act like one…it’s just who I am. I feel daft trying to sound a certain way, I can’t do it. I was originally going to call this page ‘Scheme Dug Yoga’. 🙈😂😂

But as I say, we’re back on from Monday. You’re welcome to join in. 🙏
