Bowen is unique in that Therapists work with the body, rather than using any force or hard manipulation. We also leave breaks during the session, initiating “interoception” – your brain’s perception of your body’s state, transmitted from receptors on all your internal organs.

The therapist will make Bowen moves drawing attention to an area of the body, then during the breaks the brain asks the body "how do you feel, and do I need to do anything about that?"

You may not have heard of interoception yet, but it is one of the fastest moving areas in neuroscience and psychology. Bowen is the only therapy that deliberately leaves breaks, allowing interoception to take place.

💪 The Piriformis Muscle: Everything You Need to Know!

📍 Origin: The piriformis muscle originates from the anterior surface of the sacrum.
Insertion: Inserts on the greater trochanter, a bony prominence on the outer side of the femur.

🏋️ Actions: The piriformis muscle plays a significant role in hip rotation and stability. It externally rotates your hip, turning your leg outward. Additionally, it works synergistically with other muscles to abduct your leg (move it away from the midline of your body).

⚙️ Pathology: Piriformis Syndrome is a condition where the piriformis muscle becomes tight or inflamed, causing an array of symptoms. This can be caused by prolonged sitting, overuse during activities, muscle imbalances, or direct trauma to the muscle.

🔍 Symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome:
*Deep gluteal pain (pain in the buttocks) which may radiate down the back of the thigh or leg
*Numbness or tingling sensation along the sciatic nerve pathway
*Difficulty sitting or standing for long periods
*Increased pain during activities involving hip rotation

🦶 Fascia Bowen moves over the Piriformis muscle has also been observed to relieve painful symptoms in foot conditions such as Plantar Fasciaitis.

🔬 Diagnosis and Treatment: A healthcare professional, such as a physiotherapist or doctor, can accurately diagnose piriformis syndrome. Treatment approaches may include Bowen Technique, stretching exercises, strengthening exercises for imbalances and possibly medication or injections in severe cases.

🧘‍♂️ Prevention: To keep your piriformis muscle healthy and reduce the risk of piriformis syndrome, incorporate the following habits into your routine:
1️⃣ Regular flexibility and stretching exercises for the hip and gluteal muscles.
2️⃣ Maintain good posture and avoid prolonged sitting.
3️⃣ Engage in proper warm-up exercises before physical activities.
4️⃣ Strengthen the surrounding muscles through targeted exercises.
5️⃣ Listen to your body and take breaks if you experience pain or discomfort.

Remember, taking care of your muscles plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle! 🌟

Glymphatics - the lymphatic system in your brain responsible for removing toxins from the brain - drains into our sinuses and into lymph nodes located in our neck.

It is therefore very important to keep these areas as clear and as open as possible in order to support brain lymphatics. The work we do with Bowen around the neck and jaw is absolute gold in supporting the glymphatic system.
