DOES YOUR CHILD MOUTH BREATHE?
Why Nasal Breathing Matters for Kids (and Parents Need to Know This!)
If you’re a parent, teacher, or work with young children in any way, this is really important!
Patrick McKeown’s book Buteyko Meets Dr Mew highlights something many dentists and even healthcare professionals overlook: the huge impact mouth breathing can have on a child’s development.
According to the journal General Dentist:
“The vast majority of healthcare professionals are unaware of the negative impact of upper airway obstruction (mouth breathing) on normal facial growth and physiological health.”
Here’s what can happen if mouth breathing goes untreated in children:
✅ Long, narrow faces
✅ Narrow mouths
✅ High palatal vaults
✅ Crooked teeth (malocclusion)
✅ Gummy smiles
✅ Poor sleep due to obstructed airways
✅ Increased risk of ADHD misdiagnosis
Lack of proper sleep can also affect growth, learning, and behaviour.
The good news?
If mouth breathing is treated early, these negative effects on facial and dental development, along with related health and social problems, can be prevented.
Early awareness = better health and happier kids!
Encourage nasal breathing from a young age...it’s a simple change with lifelong benefits.
