👋 We'd like to introduce you to our team of expert therapists, supporting our tiniest patients and their families in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ( ) at Royal Infirmary! 🌟
👩⚕️ Dietitian Sally Aitken, Occupational Therapist Claire Douglas, Clinical Psychologist Rachel Foxwell, Speech Therapist Alexandra Smuts, and Physiotherapist Victoria Ingram work together with neonatology doctors, nurses, and health care assistants to help babies born early, some weighing as little as 500g. 🍼
🏥 Hull is a Level 3 NICU, caring for babies with the highest need from all over the country. NICU Matron Francesca Matthews and Consultant Neonatologist Dr Eleanor Peirce have created the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to give these babies the best chance of survival. 💪
🧠 Babies experience rapid brain development and develop neural pathways in the womb during the last trimester of pregnancy. Premature birth can disrupt this development and those born very early have to go through this crucial stage outside the womb.
👶 NICU’s Allied Health Professionals and Psychological Professional (AHPP) team help to create and support a protective environment for the babies, promoting developmental care, such as skin-to-skin contact, often called “kangaroo care.” 🦘
💖 The AHPPs can also offer specialist assessment and advice for feeding and swallowing, nutrition, physical development, and parental emotional wellbeing. They work collaboratively to provide comprehensive care for neonates and their families.
💪 They support parents who may have post-traumatic stress disorder or are struggling with what they and their babies are experiencing. They also support staff who have to care for some of the tiniest and sickest patients in the country.

Our Hepatitis C screening team recently secured funding from NHS England to take their service on the road. Thanks to the input of our specialist nurses and community engagement leads, the innovative design of our two new mobile clinics maintains privacy and dignity for patients while meeting all our staff's professional needs.
The Hepatitis C screening team is passionate about education and reducing the prevalence of this virus which, if untreated, can lead to long-term health problems such as liver damage, cirrhosis and cancer.
Over the coming months, they will be visiting community locations all over Hull, East Yorkshire, North and North East Lincolnshire, plus parts of North Yorkshire, to offer screening, advice and treatment to patient groups who find it difficult to access mainstream healthcare for various reasons.

Today is National Healthcare Estates and Facilities Day – and we’re celebrating the hidden heroes who keep our hospitals running smoothly, allowing our clinical staff to give you excellent care.
When you think about our hospitals, it’s likely that the first thing that comes to mind are our fantastic doctors and nurses.
However, they couldn’t do what they do without the support of their colleagues in Estates, Facilities, and Development, who are here to help you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Amanda Stanford, Acting Chief Executive Officer for NHS Humber Health Partnership, said: “We have around 1,800 staff working across Estates, Facilities and Development, who all play a pivotal role in making sure that we have safe, clean, and secure environments in which our core, clinical teams can operate in.
“In the last year, these teams have delivered £62 million worth of projects, building new facilities and improving our existing buildings; they are our leaders in driving net zero and sustainability and have secured significant external funding.
“They have served up almost £2 million meals to our patients, helping them to get the nutrition they need to aid their recovery; handled a million items of post and our porters have collectively clocked up enough steps to circumnavigate the world 36-and-a-half times as they help to transport patients and equipment around our sites.
“I’d like to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to each and every one of those 1,800 individuals - NHS Humber Health Partnership could not operate without you.”

If you have ever fancied a career in NHS Facilities but have been put off by the application process or lack of experience, we have some fantastic news for you.
Not only are we currently recruiting for Hospital Support Assistants, Porters and Catering Assistants, but thanks to an innovative partnership with our Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) colleagues at the Jobcentre, we have revolutionised our recruitment process to support you through the whole process – and help you to pick up some useful qualifications along the way.
The system has proved to be so successful, a quarter of our Facilities workforce at Scunthorpe has now been recruited using this method – and some have already progressed into team leader roles.
