Requiring lifesaving expertise of paediatric specialists in Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).Lucy got stronger by the day and after 14 weeks of struggles and setbacks she was finally allowed to go home to her loving family who had been waiting for the day. Lucy has already faced many hard hurdles continually fighting off chest infections due to the prematurity of Lucy’s lungs and an inability to gain weight requiring frequent admission to hospital. At around 18 months of age it became apparent Lucy wasn't meeting all the milestones especially sitting, standing and walking, experts told the family Lucy would take longer due her prematurity. However after months of persistent health visits, GP visits and so-forth, Lucy was finally tested for Cerebral Palsy and the diagnosis was positive. The debilitating condition affects Lucy’s mobility and she suffers with spasticity in her legs, she walks on her tip toes, her legs turn in at the knee and she has low muscle tone in her trunk. Lucy get around with the help of a walking frame and has to wear leg supports for at least two hours every day, however she tires easily so has to be pushed in her wheelchair to and from school. Lucy does not like her wheelchair so insists on trying to walk home this usually result in her falling over every few yards, yet with sheer determination she picks herself up and carries on. Lucy is a fighter and has achieved so much already in her short life, her disability is overcome with adaptation, modifications and a stubborn refusal to give in. Lucy attends a mainstream school loves to sing, dance and play just like every other child her age and wants her independence. Unlike other children who get a bike a Tricycle will actually transform Lucy’s life and allow her the same independence and fun that other children enjoy. Therefore ‘Lucy’s Legs’ has been set up by her supporters to initially raise the £ 1364.00 for a custom built first Trike with all the modifications she needs due to her disability. However Lucy will of course need further equipment with adaptations and adjustments as well treatment and operations not currently funded by the NHS as she grows. So let’s start the ball rolling and raise enough for this bicycle and make little Lucy’s wish come true.
