In March 2021, I made the life changing decision to hang up my baking apron (after being known by many in the local area as “The Cake Lady”) and following completion of the most interesting and supported training programme run by Celebrant Training Academy Scotland I qualified as a Celebrant.
This was the start of a role which has allowed me to give everything I naturally have to offer - Compassion, patience, empathy and time.
During the past 5 years, I have met the most wonderful families who have entrusted me with their loved one’s memories. I have been granted the honour of sharing stories and memories whilst also creating loving, heartwarming, sometimes funny, sometimes devastating funeral services.
Every day I feel privileged to be part of a loved one’s special day, and every day I think myself lucky to be in such a rewarding role.
I’m often asked if I “enjoy” my job. And yes, I do. Enjoy is an unusual word to use when it comes to funerals, but I don’t see my role as a chore - it’s a way of life and I speak of my vocation with pride, passion and a warm feeling in my heart.
Being a celebrant comes with its challenges and heartache but the one thing I always remember is that I am supporting families through one of the worst times of their lives. There are no rules when it comes to grief and I’m there to not only do my best for the loved one who has passed, but to do my best for those left behind.
The past 5 years have taught me that I can do what I set my mind to, they’ve taught me that there are so many nice people out there and they’ve shown me that I have finally found my calling.
I feel grateful, humbled and honoured to carry out such a role.
