There is something special about standing where your ancestors once lived.

I have been working with an American client who will soon be visiting our beautiful country. She wants to visit the streets where her ancestors used to live in Perthshire. She also asked me to find out where some of her ancestors were buried. Using registers, census returns, valuation rolls, and burial records, I have created a beautiful document with all the information she needs.

She will soon be walking in her ancestors footsteps.

Where did your ancestors live?

I love butter ... do you?

I recently visited the Butter Museum in Cork, Ireland, where I learned about the ancient job of butter making.

Long ago, butter was an important part of everyday life in Scotland, especially in farming communities where families made and sold dairy products to earn a living.

After my visit, I decided to write an article about the butter maker, the skills needed for the job, and some of the old traditions connected to butter making.

I hope you enjoy reading it. The link is in the comment.

What is your favourite type of butter?

It has been a few days since the 1926 Irish Census was released… have you searched for your ancestors yet?

Many Irish families emigrated to Scotland during the 19th century in search of a better life. I also often find Scottish families relocating to Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century for employment opportunities.

This is one of the most exciting record releases in recent years for anyone with Irish roots.

Have you managed to find anyone in the 1926 Irish Census yet?

If you have Irish roots, this is one to explore.

Genealogy conference in Cork this week… but I still managed to squeeze in some history!

I visited the Cork Butter Museum and learned something I did not expect — butter used to be stored in wooden containers called firkins and buried in boggy ground to preserve it. The museum has a firkin with the butter still in it from 1000 years ago! I don’t think I would spread it on my toast 😂

Was your ancestor a butter maker?

Real research in action ...

Ever wondered what a real family history research looks like?

This week I have been researching a case where:
• A mother disappears from the records after 1840
• The father is unknown
• There are possible links to Perth
• And even a possible journey to Canada

No clear answers yet — but several promising leads.

Sometimes the story is not straightforward… but that is what makes it so interesting.
