Diaphragm is associated with breathing. However, it is a muscle which has a big influence on many bodily functions. Some of them are :
- respiratory movements and connected with it fascia can influence good functioning of kidneys
- diaphragm can help in the body's response to stress and can affect the level of libido by stimulating adrenal glands
- diaphragm affects venous and lymphatic drainage (good function can, for example help to reduce swelling)
- regulates pressure in the body cavities, this influences the entire body, including proper function of Pelvic Floor Muscles
- as the diaphragm attaches to the spine, it's increased tension or dysfunction can cause back pain, and vice versa - spinal dysfunction or tension can affect our breathing
- the vagus nerve (which supplies internal organs) passes through one of the openings of the diaphragm. High tension in this muscle can press on the nerve and result in deregulated work of the organs.
It's amazing how our body is connected and one structure affects the rest. That's why it's important to keep yourself in balance, taking care of your body and staying active within your abilities.
If you feel sore, back pain keeps coming back or your body just feels tense and tight then do something about it. Do not wait for injury to occur or disjunction to deepen.
Keep stretching, stay active and hydrated, take time to relax and breathe.
