Suboccipital muscles are located at the base of the skull and when tight can cause:

• headaches
• neck tension/ pain
• scalp tenderness
• decreased movement
• eye pain

Prolonged neck forward flexion, e.g. during work or when on the phone, can lead to tightness in the occipital area, causing compression on the vagus nerve and surrounding structures. Stress, tight shoulders, poor posture and lack of exercise can add to it causing sore head, dizziness and tension.

Manual therapy can reduce tension, help to realign the position of your head, improve blood flow and release compression within the area. Remedial massage and few simple home exercises can significantly decrease and eliminate tension within suboccipital muscles.

Do you spend a lot of time in a sitting position? Or working in a forward flexion a lot? Is your back stiff and the front of your pelvis tight?

Try the stretch - relax in to it. Do it slowly and with control. Remember about breathing. Take time to relax and remember about hydration.
