๐ Adder warning!
We treated our first adder bite patient of the year at the weekend, so wanted to remind owners to be vigilant when walking their dogs, particularly through long undergrowth.
At this time of year, the warmer days bring the adders out. However, itโs not quite warm enough for them to be as mobile as they are in the height of summer, so they are much less likely to get out of your dogโs way if they hear them coming.
As the adders are also just coming out of hibernation, their venom sacks are full, which means a bite will be worse than it would be in the autumn.
If you ever suspect your dog has been bitten, please phone us straight away.
We commonly see bites on dogsโ noses or legs. If your dog has been bitten on the leg, please carry them, if you can.
Sometimes, you might not witness the bite, but notice that your dog appears unwell during or shortly after a walk. Signs to look out for include: a swelling, two small holes in the centre of the swelling, howling (in pain), and your dog becoming uncomfortable, lethargic or progressively lame. Some dogs can develop breathing issues, if they have an allergic reaction to the venom.
If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. ๐
