Do you know the different map symbols?

Maps usually have a key that explains the symbols and their meanings. Using different shapes, colours and symbols to show all the roads, trails, buildings, rivers and other fascinating intricacies of the landscape. When on DofE, it helps you understand where you are permitted to explore and where you may need to take precaution.

Next time you reach for your Ordnance Survey map before heading out, see how many symbols you recognise.

A throwback to a couple of weeks ago when Myeloma fundraisers took to the Jurassic Coast to hike those mighty hills... or what we describe as an "undulating" journey.

Orange shirts beaming from the trail like rays of sunshine to match their high spirits, the wonderful people who joined us brought positive energy and determination by the bucket load.

What an absolute joy it is to share the trail with people who are challenging themselves and making every step count. And to finish up with big smiles and many comments on what a fantastic weekend was had is the cherry on top.

We caught up with Hilary after her phenomenal triathlon experience on the Jurassic Coast this past weekend. Miles of trekking trail, a satisfying canoe phase where her training paid off, and riding smooth tarmac with gorgeous views.

Hilary shares why this triathlon makes a perfect day out and spoiler alert: "you don’t need to be a cycling superstar or a speed walker!"

A team of two, Hilary and Mike's training paid off as they set off over the start line. Hilary and Mike, also happen to be parents of our Event Director Chris, so this added an extra special element to what was already a fantastic finale to our season. Read Hilary's latest blog on her triathlon experience with us...

How many TAE staff members does it take to deflate a powerboat, you ask??

All under the watchful (giggling) eye of Ben!

It's the official pack down as the event season comes to a close, autumnal conditions are underway, and ideas of winter adventures start to bubble away.

One of the most talked about scenarios when it comes to safety within a DofE setting is cooking. When hungry, tired participants turn to cooking dinner at camp, this is when practiced skills and full focus is required.

Some of the top safety advice we tell our participants include;
- Wearing properly covered shoes for protection... not crocs, sliders or flip flops
- When the stove and pan is on, remain in a position that is easy to move in case of any spillages
- Always use a handle to move your pan and/or lid to avoid any burnt fingers

Often, participants say that cooking dinner is one of their favourite skills on expedition. The appreciation of a hot meal after a long day combined with the independence of planning and cooking your own meal gives them great satisfaction.

Race the Sun Jurassic this past weekend was the last in the RTS triathlon series for 2025 and it delivered on all accounts; the fundraising achievements, an epic day of adventure with everyone giving it some welly, and everyone involved bringing positive energy. It is an absolute pleasure to create these events and we already cannot wait for next year!

We haven't yet looked back at our stats for 2025 but the comments we have had so far about how wonderful it is to see so many women at our events has been truly fantastic to hear.

Steve Ashworth has pulled it out the bag again with his awesome capturing of the event.

Today's activity? The Adventure Element's Ben is in the midst of tackling the Yorkshire 3 Peaks on the 3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross event.

Weather has been on side so far, although this is one of the toughest cycle cross races on the circuit.

Absolutely stellar effort from all riders.

Our Event Director Chris had the pleasure of having his parents Hilary and Mike as participants at Race the Sun Jurassic this weekend. It's not every day you get to bring your parents to your workplace!

Mike ran his own adventure centre before he retired, so it was a full circle moment to see Chris in action keeping a 300-participant-strong triathlon going.

END OF SEASON! 💫 The last Race the Sun of 2025 took place on the Jurassic Coast yesterday and boy was it a special one to finish up with.

Nearly 300 participants took on the Jurassic Coast in aid of Action Medical Research and gave it their all. Over the course of the year, participants have helped to raise an incredible £1.4 million for Action Medical Research Events at events across the UK and every penny truly makes a difference to young lives.

These events depend on amazing people coming together to make the magic happen: from the participants digging deep to the caterers keeping everyone well fuelled, safety staff, phase experts, the relentless cheering and support from Action Medical Research, seamless logistics and planning, and the hard work of our staff. We are incredibly proud to have the privilege of such a warm, wonderful community.

Cheers were had yesterday as we wrapped up but we cannot wait to come back in 2026 and invite more fundraisers to join in the fun, welcome back return participants, visit new Race the Sun locations and create more magic. See you there! 🤟

The Adventure Element owner Ben Keen is wrapping up the event season by competing in the famously-gruelling 3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross.

Described as '38 miles, of which 34 is rideable (20 cross and 18 road) and 5000 feet of climbing'!

** Wishing the very best of luck to Ben! **

Its been a busy day on the Jurassic Coast for this flock of seagulls. They've been spotted flapping their wings as they ride and cawing as they land at each phase.

Hiking, biking and canoeing their way around the Race the Sun course! ...attracting cheers and laughs all the way.
