Lanark & District u3a

Lanark & District u3a Our organisation is not determined by age but rather is for anyone who is retired or semi-retired but not retiring. Interested in what we do then come along.

The Lanark & District u3a group was formed in 2011 by just a few, keen pioneers. The membership has now grown to around 200 members. The u3a is a world-wide organization which started around 40 years ago, with the purpose of enriching the lives of people in their third age. There are now over 1000 u3as across the UK. We have a wide range of activities that you might want to try out (or not … it is up to you). The monthly meetings in Lanark Memorial Hall are of an open nature to allow members and enquirers to attend. An opportunity to listen to interesting speakers on a wide range of subjects. Just for Enjoyment
There are lots of activity groups focused purely on enjoyment. The Lunch group, the Humour group and the Outings group are examples of how to have a good time. Why not? You have earned your time for fun and relaxation. Learn Something New
We can learn new things at any age, in fact it helps the brain to be mentally challenged. You may want to find out about your family history, learn a new language, start appreciating poetry etc; now is the time to start making your brain work a little bit harder. Good Exercise
Whether it is Walking, Cycling, Dancing, Yoga, or Pickle ball, we all know that we should try and do some more exercise. Join with other u3a members who will be happy to meet you for a chat while you are improving your health.

Join us for “Portraits of India” at our Open Meeting at the Greyfriars Church at 2pm on Wednesday, 18th March. Kirk Lothian, photographer, will give an illustrated talk on his travels in India. All Welcome!

“March 2024: My wife and I sat in a cafe and talked about dreams over lunch. Nine months later I was solo travelling across India with a camera and a bag containing miniature bottles of Glenlivet Single Malt Whisky and shortbread.
Most of the time was spent walking the backstreets of the cities from dawn till dusk and into the night, talking to and photographing the local people of Delhi, Jaipur, Pushkar, Jodhpur and Udaipur.

My objective was a respectful connection with another culture I knew very little about. The photographic portraits were all made from 3 feet or less from the subject and communication was mainly a smile and a gesture that asked permission.

A year and a half later and I still speak regularly with the people I met on that adventure and the connections continue to grow…"

“I am dedicated to helping people achieve their goals in life. We all have a unique experience of life which is shaped by events and circumstances. Our experiences make us who we are but sometimes we fall into patterns of thoughts and behaviours which are unhelpful to us, causing problems for us in our life. We are all gifted with potential but sometimes we need the space and guidance to make the changes in our ways of thinking which are holding us back from achieving that potential.”
