Today we pause to remember Tom Bowen on his birthday, a day that continues to hold deep meaning for everyone in the Bowen community worldwide and those connected to Bowen College UK.

Tom’s legacy lives on in the values he championed, the lives he touched, and the lasting impact he made within our community. His vision, dedication, and generosity of spirit continue to inspire students, staff, and all who walk through our doors.

On this day, we not only remember Tom, but also celebrate his life, the difference he made and the foundation he helped build for future generations.

He is never forgotten, and always appreciated.

How often do you actually think about your breathing?

For most of us, it’s something we only notice when something feels wrong — breathlessness, tension, anxiety, poor sleep, or persistent fatigue.

But breathing well is one of the simplest ways to support the nervous system, improve circulation, reduce muscular tension and build long-term resilience in the body.

In this short online workshop, Bowen therapist and breathwork educator Laura van Tatenhove shares practical tools to help you understand how functional breathing affects everyday health — and how small changes can make a meaningful difference.

In just 2¼ hours, you’ll explore how breathing relates to things like posture, stress, sleep, pain patterns and recovery, and learn techniques you can use for yourself, your family, or with clients if you work in a health or teaching role.

It’s all about relaxation at the Tara centre today with our monthly low cost therapy session. Acupuncture, Reiki and Bowen therapy…three modalities that aim to help regulate the nervous system. When we are relaxed and not ‘strung out’ there is more space and possibility that our tissues, organs, muscles, cells can repair and function better.

Very excited about this new publication and how it will help my Better Breathing for Better Health workshop. Such a rich study of the far reaching effects of breathing on the life of everything (!!) not just humans.
In terms of humans though..this quote is definitely getting in the PowerPoint
“Breathe well, because how you breathe is how you live.”

My latest blog where I explore the relationship of the sea, all inclusive hotels in fuertaventura, art, working in french vineyards and the notion of equality to breath. If you get a chance to read it let me know what you think.

In my breath education workshops, I always take a moment at the beginning to talk about the essential nature of breathing: the fact that we are all doing it all the time, regardless of age, nationality, or status. It is the first and last thing we do, and it is intricately linked to our sense of saf...

Here’s to presence, gentler rhythms, and natural pauses this Christmas.

Today we’re feeling grateful for our Bowen community - practitioners, students, tutors, and those just beginning to explore this work. Each of us carries Bowen forward in our own way, through curiosity, care, and connection.

Bowen has never been about techniques alone. It’s about listening. Respecting the body’s timing. Offering support without force and trusting the process when the conditions are right.

We hope today brings you space to rest, reflect, and reconnect with yourself and with the people around you.

Wishing you a peaceful Christmas and warm festive days ahead.

Just had a fantastic weekend with this mother and daughter team from Warrington, teaching the Introduction to Bowen at the Tara Centre in Lancaster. As well as learning a full body treatment we spent some time exploring the more subtle and refined aspects of the Bowen move, developing the ability to discern the correct pressure and a deeper understanding of the symbiotic (two way) relationship between the therapist and person being treated that. My aim is to help future Bowen practitioners develop the skills for effective for healing and repair to take place.
The first thing we did was play with the non Newtonian properties of cornflour and water. As you’ll see in the video, the more pressure I direct into the paste, the more it resists me (and the more physical effort I inflict into the space and back into me!! ). When I lighten the touch (as light as a feather) the cornflour substance lets me in and draws my finger into the paste. This is the same principle that we apply for the Bowen move.
The second exploration involved making a pair of moves on the erector spinal muscles of the lower back…first directly on skin, then through clothing, then through a single layer of towels and so on, maintaining a sense of the move for both the therapist and the person being treated. Now I thought I was pretty good at this but I think I’ve been out-sensed!!!! Such a brilliant way of developing skilled, insightful and patient application of therapeutic touch.

What makes Bowen Therapy different?

Unlike many manual therapies that focus purely on structure or technique, Bowen works at the intersection of body and mind.

It’s gentle, precise, and powerful. Bowen engages the nervous system in a way that invites deep rest, repair, and realignment.

Because Bowen works with the body — not on it — it supports profound change without strain, force, or fatigue (for client or practitioner).

As Jihan Adem, founder of Bowen College UK, puts it:

“Bowen is different from other techniques as it integrates mind-body connections, facilitating a holistic approach to health.”

If you’re already a wellness practitioner looking to expand your skills, or you’re burnt out and craving a career that supports both your wellbeing and your clients’ — Bowen might be the path you've been looking for.
