Your brain evolved to respond to sunlight. Bright light means day. Darkness means night. Your hormones, sleepiness, and mood follow this rhythm.

Then we invented screens.

Research on blue light exposure shows that screens in the evening suppress melatonin production, delay sleep onset, and reduce sleep quality. A 2025 study in eBioMedicine linked poor sleep patterns to accelerated brain aging.

When you scroll your phone in bed, you're essentially telling your brain the sun is still up. Your melatonin stays suppressed. Your cortisol stays elevated. Your body stays in "day mode" when it should be transitioning to sleep.

The result? You lie awake wondering why you can't fall asleep.

In my practice, the single sleep intervention that helps the most patients is also the simplest: no screens in the bedroom.

Here's the protocol: set a screen curfew 60 minutes before your ideal bedtime. Put your phone in another room. Charge it on the kitchen counter. If you need an alarm, use an old-fashioned alarm clock.

The first few nights will feel strange. You'll reach for your phone out of habit. That's okay. The urge fades within a week.

What replaces screen time? Reading (ideally a physical book). Stretching. Gentle music. Conversation. Journaling. Silence.

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary for sleep, not an extension of your office.

Some mornings in clinic just remind me why I do this.
A lovely client sat down with me recently and said,
“I feel like I’ve tried everything and nothing sticks anymore.”
