So I’m having a bad day…

Today, we're talking about something we all experience but often don't discuss—having a bad day.

It's important to acknowledge when we’re feeling down and to understand that it’s perfectly okay. Thats why I’m writing this post because as the title suggests, I’m having a really bad day!

We all have those days when nothing seems to go right, today is one of them and it feels like the weight of the world is on our/my shoulders. Admitting that we’re having a bad day is the first step towards feeling better. It’s a part of being human, and there’s no need to hide it or feel ashamed.

As I write this I’m sitting in a coffee shop and I’m desperately trying to hold back tears of utter desperation as the life, I imagined I was building, begins to collapse.

It’s time to admit the truth.

Today, I feel like I’m drowning. I’m exhausted from treading water in the middle of an ocean and the spectators on the big ship passing slowly by applauding, instead of helping or throwing a life line or putting a life boat in the water. Are instead just laughing as they look at me telling me how much stronger I will be getting myself out of the middle of the ocean and swimming to shore thousands of miles away.

Maybe that’s true, but only if I survive the day, right?

So as a qualified therapist here is my advice to myself and anyone else who cares to read it.

Here’s why it’s important to talk about bad days:

1. **Emotional Release**: Talking about our feelings helps release pent-up emotions and reduces stress.

2. **Connection**: Sharing our struggles can create a sense of connection and understanding with others. It reminds us that we’re not alone.

3. **Perspective**: Verbalizing our thoughts can provide clarity and perspective, helping us to see solutions more clearly.

4. **Support**: Opening up allows others to offer support, encouragement, and advice."

Talking to someone you trust about your bad day can make a big difference.

It could be a friend, family member, or even a therapist. Just expressing how you feel can be incredibly therapeutic.

Now, let’s discuss some practical tips to help change your state when you’re having a bad day:

1. **Take a Break**: Sometimes, stepping away from the situation and giving yourself a moment to breathe can help reset your mind. Sitting in a public coffee shop and writing a post!

2. **Physical Activity**: Exercise releases endorphins, which can improve your mood. A walk with Monty my dog, a workout, or even some stretching can make a big difference.

3. **Mindfulness and Meditation**: Practice mindfulness or meditation to center yourself and reduce anxiety. Even a few minutes of deep breathing can help.

4. **Positive Distractions**: Engage in activities that bring you joy, whether it’s reading, listening to music, watching a funny video, or spending time with a pet, Monty my dog.

5. **Gratitude Journal**: Write down things you’re grateful for. Focusing on the positive aspects of your life can shift your mindset.

6. **Reach Out**: Talk to someone who can offer a listening ear and support. Sometimes, just knowing someone cares can make all the difference.

7. **Self-Compassion**: Be kind to yourself. Acknowledge that it’s okay to have bad days and that they don’t define you. Treat yourself with the same compassion you would offer a friend.

Changing your state isn’t about ignoring your feelings or pretending everything is okay. It’s about acknowledging your emotions and taking proactive steps to feel better. It’s a process, and it’s different for everyone.

Remember, it’s perfectly okay to have a bad day. What’s important is how we respond to it. By acknowledging our feelings, talking about them, and using theis advice to change our state, we can navigate through tough times with resilience and grace.

Stay strong, stay positive, and remember to be kind to yourself.
